Ahem! Shahriar Nafees cracked 147 vs Durham for Bangladesh A in a OD game last summer. Besides, he's only played a handful of FC games outside Tests, and over two thirds of his one-day games have been in ODIs.

DanielFullard will like this little piece of info..

Congrats Gillespie, on getting double hundred.

But in all honesty the great West Indian team had guys like Marshall (who batted at 8 or 9) but who were good enough to make Double Hundreds against SL then (or had there been opportunity to play the likes of Bangla or Zim ), But I think those guys had a sense of (humility and ) wanting to preserve the dignity of their opposition and would sacrifice their wicket to preserve the dignity of their opponents.

This does not in any way attempt to belittle Gillespie's Double Ton.

But that was the dignified nature of the Great West Indian Team of Lloyd's , IMO.
hahahaha.... .....hahahahaha

interesting interview with Clark on the news tonight where he said that he wanted to play this Test but only went home after he was told Gillespie would be playing

he could be a one series wonder

To be fair to Clark, he looked a bit stiff and sore in the 1st Test match against Banga.

I don't think Gillespie has jumped ahead of him for the 1st Ashes Test.

I was wondering... is there any concrete definition of what a night-watchman is? I mean something like "a player from bottom half of batting order coming in after fall of X wicket with X overs remaining in day's play or in a) b) c) circumstances".

There isn't a definition, is there? And there can't be one, realistically. And therefore saying something like "Gillespie is the highest scoring night watchman in cricket" is incorrect, because "night watchman" hasn't been and can't be defined...

I imagine the definition would be based on how far a player was from their normal batting position. Gillespie has only batted in the top order a couple of times in his career, so going up there would qualify him as a night watchman.

It's a difficult thing to define, but obviously people have for statistical purposes, since there are complete lists of the highest scorers.

...someone sent in to survive the night, whereupon they bore the paying public to within an inch of their lives the following morning.

i hate night-watchmen. they take themselves too seriously the next day.

As if you wouldn't take the opportunity. Would you really throw away your wicket in a Test match?

Hell no. I was half joking. But I would be a little more aggressive the following morning, and try to give the specialist batsman the strike at every available opportunity.

I'm not sure if Dizzy's batting would come into the equation for selections.....might do though.
Not if selecting only 4 bowlers it won't, especially with Warne and Lee inked into 2 of the spots.

I think it would if it was a close thing. For example, if McGrath was to return to the team now, Gillespie would be retained ahead of Stuart Clark, and his batting would have a part in that. The value of a tail as good as Warne, Lee and Gillespie for Australia is significant, after all.

I wish Gillespie would join NZ. He could be our new opener. From highlights i've seen on t.v it looked to be a great innings and quite confident in his shots as well.

They've already changed it once because I emailed my mate who works for them to point out that either Tudor should be on there or Gillespie not.

So darn inaccurate. Anyone else think of nigh****chmen top scoring that Cricinfo have missed?
