Captaincy is definitely an issue. When the team has lost 10 ODI finals out of 13, there is definitely something wrong with the way the team is led. Especially when you look at Ganguly's methods.
First of all, on a slow turner, why should a captain play 3 medium-pacers? Only two bowlers looked capable, and they took 2 wickets for 90- an average of 45- hardly match-winning. Zaheer broke down yet again and needs to sort out issues as far as fitness and match temperament are concerned. A part-timer like Sachin, who is prone to bowling a lot of rubbish given an extended spell, returned 2/40 in 10 overs, while Sehwag's 10 returned 1/32, while even Harbhajan got a wicket for not too many. But still, why did the bowlers not complete their full 10 overs when in form? Is Sachin Tendulkar really far better than Irfan, Nehra and Harbhajan?
And why was Kumble sitting out? Is he worse than the three seamers? Look at his wicket-tally. He has more wickets than Zaheer and Nehra put together. And a far, far better leggie than Sachin. Yet he sits out. In fact, only one spinner plays, alongside three seamers, when out of the team's four best bowlers, two are spinners. Both capable match-winners, especially Kumble. Even when a spinner plays, he is treated as a second-rate defensive bowler, even when he is an attacking bowler like Kumble. Is it ever hard to imagine why the Indians are unable to bowl teams out in ODI's?
Even in batting, there are several issues to sort out. The Number 3 position is something crucial- only someone good enough for that position goes in there- Ponnting, Gurusinha and Kallis are there in tournament-winning teams. On form, is Ganguly as good as any of them? No way. He has struggled against the fast ball, the moving ball and the high ball. His strike rate, due to lack of boundaries and runs between wickets, has been awful. Yet he comes out to bat in this position, which should be taken by Rahul Dravid, or VVS Laxman.
Why should Yuvraj always bat so low down the order? He comes in to face slow bowlers, against whom he has his problems when he starts. No doubt he must improve upon that aspect, but his main strength is batting against the new ball, when it comes on the bat at a good pace. Besides, he is the captain's choice as opener. That is reason enough to send him at a higher position. The way he is batting now, is he really the right choice for opening the innings?
Rahul Dravid has been wicketkeeping in as many as 10 ODI series, but just two of them were won by the Indians. How can it be considered successful? Each time he is keeping, he struggles to even hold the ball! This upsets many a bowler or fielder throwing from the deep, as the run-out miss showed. A real wicketkeeper is what the team needs behind the stumps- he has to take catches, complete stumpings, effect runouts, and if possible, bat like a top order batsman, or at least contribute 10-20 runs from number 9. The selectors know this best, but does the captain? The answer is known to one and all.
