The Indians should play 5 bowlers, if Dravid keeps. That was introduced for balance, but having 7 batsmen does not add much balance. Besides, you're always a batsman short if one of them is injured, and if they're out of form, they still stay. Besides, Pathan is a very good #7. He may not be an all-rounder right now, but given enough opportunities, and a lot of practice, he can become one in the next 4/5 years. A bowler getting runs can help enforce results for a team quite well. Pathan has big match temperament as a batsman. He has his bowling to fall back on, and can make up for a disappointment with the ball with a good innings. A far better option than Parthiv Patel.
They can try playing 2 spinners- Pakistani basmen play seam better than spin. If Nehra's fielding has improved, he can play, else Balaji has to cut down in wides.- he will have to do so anyway. Bhajji may not be a Muralitharan, but if he bowls the way he did v/s Bangladesh, Kumble will get far more support and will be more effective.
Most importantly, throws have to hit the stumps. That extra runs should be stopped. Against Pakistan, fielding can win a match.
Bowling plans:
Pathan (long spell, must swing the ball)
Balaji/Nehra (may be taken off early, should bowl line/length)
Kumble (may be brought in early to slow the pace, should attack)
Sehwag (may be brought on early, should bowl 7 overs)
Harbhajan (start late, in middle overs, must stick to line and length, must attack)
Sachin (only 3 overs, a partnership breaker)
