Gareth Batty
I must admit I cannot believe that in light of all the injury problems both pre-tour and now on it, they call up someone who needs to pass a fitness test in order to join the squad!

Sheer madness!

Schofield needs his Chance, England need to Encourage Leg spinners
Why, is it just because Australia have one? - you've never answered this question!

Why do we need to encourage leg spinners when our pitches almost exclusively do not help spin bowling?

Well I rate him higher than Dawson. Ask Chris a little bit about him. Chris what ya got about Gareth Batty? (Other than the fact that he's a Yorkie, played for Surrey and was described as "an interisting spinner" by Rod Marsh.)

Added to his injured status, that makes him perfect for England!

This is a pathetically simplistic argument. Half-baked Leg spin wouldn't solve anything - it would just get carted by the best batsmen in the world. The whole mentality is the issue.

Selecting Foster to keep wicket while keeping Stewart in the side with their batting 5 and 6 is lunacy and then to have Key at 7 is worse still. Chris Read should play in SA and be our regular next Summer with Foster as backup (If I remember rightly, he's the only keeper to stump Tendulkar in ODI. Or something).

Dropping Hoggard.. interesting issue. He's one of the few fully fit players we have, it's not an option.

As for Collingwood... this was a perfect chance for an Academy batsman, not a, erm... what's Collingwood?! I wouldn't pick him to bat or bowl so Australia will most likely murder either discipline..
ok, Swap Foster around with key but i will still keep my team
Hoggard is Shot basically it will do him good if he has a bit of a rest, he played non-stop for 2 years . Chris Schofield needs another chance and with the Aussies winning the ashes it will lift the pressure and he will prosper

Does Foster scores many runs in County Cricket. Is he that good to be classified as a batsman. He didn't look that great to me

Also England were just not destined to win this series, I mean half the team is injured and then McGrath takes a catch like that...then you know the Gods are just not with you.

Hussain formulated some grand plan to snare Hayden and succeeded partially, now I guess he and Fletcher will chart out similar plans for Ponting for Perth.:D:D:D

That will be the signal for Langer, Martyn, Waugh & Gilchrist to shine, I suppose.;);););)
Let's see how you would do any better with half your squad missing...;)
When is there a full squad for England?;) This excuse has been doing the rounds for quite a while now. The fact is that a even with a full-strength squad, the scoreline would still have been 2-0 for Aus by now. It's all to do with discipline, application, attitude, confidence. England has shown themselves to be lacking in all these areas. Unless they improve by leaps and bounds in these, full-strength or half-strength will be effectively equal to no-strength.

I probably agree with that sentiment. England should have grouped themselves better, but currently I noticed that the press are out hunting !

"Professionally these are painful times ... a crushing Ashes defeat and early exit from (next year's) World Cup would surely guarantee the end of the Hussain era"

"What's the most useless thing in sport? A ticket to the fifth day of an England Test"

This is not very inspiring, and is unsporting. Hell even the Pakistani press do a better job. I mean before even the WC has started you start to think it all up, its going to be an early exit Nasser will be packing his bags, this is not the right attitude towards players and very painful for them to read such comments. I mean it is okay to be critical, but such demoralising crap is utterly useless.

Chris, are you trying to elevate Chris Schofield to Ajit Agarkar-levels of mentioning on CW?

And yes, the press in the UK are the most brain-dead bunch of short-sighted, ignorant capitalist morons with the sole desire to sell papers that I've seen.

If you want fair critique of Hussain, read my "Nightmare on Vulture Street" article ;)

Not this year he didn't, he was (somewhat surprisingly for an English player) injured!

I'm not so sure there - if England had a fully fit side, then I reckon we'd only see about one of the 2nd Test bowling attack in there and certainly at least one batsman different.

Tresocthick
Vaughan
Butcher
Hussain
Thorpe
Stewart/Flintoff
Stewart/Flintoff
Giles
Caddick
Jones
Gough.

That would be a lot better side than what we've got at the moment, and wouldn't have folded so dramatically in either Test - I think with that side it may be 1-0 with a draw, but not 2-0.

Why does he need another chance - he didn't even play in half of Lancashire's games last summer?

Also, if he was close to selection, why wasn't he selected in the Academy squad?

...I sometimes wonder if you are an England fan...or crictic. Thank's but we've got papers and the Aussies for the England bashings. We don't need another Brit.

I'm a realist.

The bloke has Surrey and Yorkshire connections, which doesn't seem to be a hindrance to a career for England - how else do you explain Rikki Clarke, Ian Ward, Ryan Sidebottom and a 1994 Craig White?
