**Official** 4th Test at Melbourne, 26-30 Dec 2024

Marsh is the problem. It means Starc and Cummins get overbowled and the former in particular has a long history of dropping off badly when overbowled. We can all talk around it, but the all-rounder position whether Green or Marsh or someone else is absolutely critical to the balance of this team unless it's an actual turner, and playing a nonentity in that position causes a dozen other problems to radiate out over the rest of the attack (as well as making the batting order look very short).
The thing with Starc getting tired too, is that once again he'll be playing all five tests, even though he has a proven track record of fatigue over a series (like the last two India home series FFS!). And as usual any kind of bowler rotation has been due to injuries.

Must say I'm not thrilled at Lyon's lack of penetrativeness this test either. He's definitely coming to the end of his career.

Its true but you are also not addressing the fact that Lyon being off the boil is also what is causing this issue. You played the same 4 bowlers without an AR for a fair while too and it was never a problem then coz Lyon bowled so many overs.
That's an issue too but it's not true that we've played without an all-rounder; in fact I'd say you have to go back a long time to find a game where we didn't play an all-rounder/5th bowling option in Aus conditions, to the point of contrivances like playing Ashton Agar at 7. This is how Mitch Marsh has 45 Tests averaging below 30 with the bat!

If Aus lose 100% odds Marsh is gone. Usually selectors make changes after a loss. 100% blame must be on the Aus selectors. They are effectively playing for the other team.

Starc also must go for scg. Becoming a liability as a series wears on. He can be used earlier in series only and certainly not in SL

I think that's why Hazlewood's injury was so annoying, it makes squad rotation a lot harder than what it needed to be especially when a lot of the second tier quicks had injury clouds too.

And while Haze playing at Brisbane is nowhere near as bad as Marsh playing here, it was still a poor call especially when the forecast was revealed. I suppose you can say it wasn't his side that went again, but I remain unconvinced that it didn't have a role either.
