***Official*** 3rd Test at the WACA

Why on earth would you have that? That was arguably the greatest Aust side ever
I was even more of a deluded optimist back then than I am now.

Plus we'd won our first Test in India in ages, put Pakistan to the sword, Freddie had the wood over the Aussies and in particular Gilchrist. And we had just beaten that ATG side less than 18 months prior don't forget.

I think most people thought Australia would win but I wasn't a lone optimistic voice.

Think Moeen will be (should be) a selection victim of this series.

Don't get me wrong, imo a Moeen innings is as good viewing as it gets. But he's just not consistent enough in either discipline. We need to invest in the young spinners we have and get someone in we think can go on to be a Test class spinner, not a Batsmen who can bowl a bit.

Probably need to start preparing flatter wickets too because we seem to have forgotten how to play proper test cricket in tough environments.
Dropping a finger spinner on the back of under performing in Australia is stupid.

England lost this match when they decided to go soft on Mitch Marsh. He was getting sweet half-vollies. He was getting them frequently; in comparison to the # of short balls.

Their lost.

Sure, but his batting has been woeful.

I probably wouldn't drop him, but hard to protest too much if he has a spell after his display here.

I think the side injury (followed by the finger injury) has affected him more than has been let on. However, doesn't excuse the fact Lyon has had him on toast thus far.

Moeen definitely shouldn't get dropped after the series. I don't see the point, considering England's lack of other spin options. Considering how awesome his bowling is in England, it'd be a very silly thing to do. Australia is basically the worst possible venue for his skill-set. It'd be like India dropping Jadeja for their home Tests because he got smashed in Australia and couldn't handle the bounce/short-pitched bowling while batting.

Bit disappointing that he got out so often to Lyon as opposed to the quicks, I think he's probably England's best player of spin after Root and Cook. I don't remember him struggling that much against Ashwin.

If you've got to try someone else out as a possible spin prospect, try him during the series, especially if Moeen is still struggling with finger injury etc. Yeah, there's the risk that a promising new guy could get smashed and have his confidence completely destroyed, but better to let that happen in a dead rubber.

I wouldn't drop him at the moment but he could well be out early in the summer. Side injury meant he missed too much preseries cricket and the cut on the finger hasn't really helped. His figures aren't that dissimilar to Swann's final Ashes.

Yeah they should try it from here. MMarsh absolutely murders them.

Well done Australia, too good for us. I have no doubt though that if these same sides were playing in England next summer England would win and instead of a lack of pace we would be discussing lack of Aussie ability to play the moving ball. Certain we will win the ashes back in England next time but already resigned to a thraping down under again unless we discover a few quick bowlers from somewhere. Makes you realise why we have persevered with Finn and Wood because the pace cupboard is bare.

Least I have a good excuse to go to bed now over the christmas period and avoid watching the inevitable 5-0.

Yeah Australia way too good for us in their own conditions and congrats to them. Can't help thinking that they put up a much better fight when they come here than we do over there though.

They would and usually do but we would win.

Can't see us beating them 5-0 and they will probably have 3 of them in their last 4 home series in a few weeks time.

Would Jimmy A be around come the next Ashes?

Pointless discussion given its far away but i'd back Estraya to win in England if the home side is without Broad and Anderson.

It is 2019 so he might be and retire after it. Not sure Broad will be, you will have problems with Roland-Jones who is very good in England.
