We're at the basin and hagley so take a risk on rachin as 5th bowler and sole spinner.
Also I think it was precisely at the moment you posted this that Rachin started bowling utter filth. His control over the art of SLA is so tenuous that even the suggestion that he be the sides main spinner on a forum that he couldn't possibly have read is sufficient to give him the yips.

Jinxing is like homeopathy though; the less powerful it is the more powerful it is.

@Flem274* just ruined Rachin's bowling for the next three months.

on day 1 sure. Throughout the rest of the game, and given the make-up of the side? Nah.
If you think Santner has turned the corner, sure.

If he gets milked at 3.5 an over as usual without taking wickets and runs from the short ball then there's no point. You're playing with 10 men.

He should have played here instead of Wags so we had more than one game to judge.

Yeah I'm disappointed he wasn't selected here as well. I'd really like to see us have a permanent spot for a specialist spinner in the side. It would have so many long term benefits with overseas tours, and encourage more to come through, hopefully encourage grounds to provide a bit more assistance for them in NZ. Plus some of our home losses in recent years have been when we've been caught short without a proper spin option - Bangladesh, South Africa 2022, possibly this test ...

Santner doesn't really need to have turned the corner. If he can bowl 20 overs for 60 and maybe pinch a wicket or two that's fine. Playing 4 quicks only worked when we had Wagner to balance the attack. With him gone, we have to acknowledge that we're operating with an ageing and injury prone set of bowlers. Trying to get by with 4 tall RMF quicks at the basin is a recipe for disaster, especially when there'll likely be a howling northerly blowing for most of it. He also brings what are likely to be badly needed extra runs.

I will grant that 4 quicks at Hagley is maybe more viable. But Santner needs to play the first test.

I was surprised that everyone here had written off SA yesterday even after the 30 odd run lead and favored NZ to come back and win. South Africa providing a good challenge to that notion so far.
