*Official* 2024 South Africa tour of New Zealand: 2 tests

Suppose SA would have been looking at 250 if they could get it. Another 180. Long way away. Need prime Bedders to eat into it.

With O'Rourke bowling like this, even though he's still far from the finished product, he does become an option for the tests vs Australia. You have enough part-timers/donkeys that can cover if he has a bad day, while he provides a cutting edge.

So it becomes an interesting question who is our best bowling attack if everyone was fit (can pretend Southee's not captain if you want to drop him). And assume a pitch like the two this series that do take some turn.

IMO the only guaranteed spots are Jamieson, and Rachin's part-timers.

Jamieson looks unlikely with a back injury

O’Rourke should play for the 1 reason that his pace is a threat compared to the others in this test

Henry is a certainty. Can't drop him after the past couple of years he'd had. KJ if fit. Can't really pretend Southee's not the captain. He's playing regardless of how well he's playing. If KJ is injured O'Rourke is a logical replacement.

It really is a quandary. I don't think we can afford to pick both Wagner and Southee. But we also need experience. This is the main problem with losing Boult as he'd have the experience and the left-arm variety.

We're at the basin and hagley so take a risk on rachin as 5th bowler and sole spinner.
Nah, can't let this series give us an inflated sense of Rachin's bowling abilities. Also want him focussing on his batting 100%. Need a spinner, especially at the Basin.

No quandary for me.
Can't believe they picked Wagner tbh. Although he bowled well tbf, but he was bowling a CdGish role rather than a Wagner role. Don't think we need a non-batting CdG.

It's Santner vs O'Rourke for me and O'Rourke provides more value.

Ideally it would be Southee missing out but gg.

Also we can hide Rachin behind the others and the other part timers.

There is the option of taking the XI from this match but replacing Wagner with O'Rourke, and potentially replacing Phillips with Santner if more spin is needed. Ticks most of the boxes above.

But 4x right arm seam plus 2x left-arm-orthodox too much?
