Went to bed at 40/2 quietly hoping the game would be wrapped up by morning. Well done to Stokes and Root, knew they'd have to be the ones to do it, but saying it is one thing, actually doing it is quite another. Especially brilliant from Stokes knocking Ajaz out of the attack. It's all well and good to say that Kane should trust him more but when you've only got a medium sized target to defend it's hard to keep a guy going when he's been carted over midwicket for fun. Having said that Kane I feel could've tried him again for a couple of overs after Stokes' dismissal, Root wouldn't have risked the same bombing tactics and he would've had a bit more of a chance to find his feet. Poor Colin, he must be feeling so sick. A mindless run-out that probably cost his team a 300 run lead and now gone from the series.

Can't say it's over just yet, but I don't think 60 is enough. England have scored too quickly for the second new ball to have much of an impact. NZ could've done with a rainy day to help the bowlers freshen up and keep England on tenterhooks but the forecast is for the weather to be pretty dry after 6am. Expect England to do it by 4 wickets.
Yeah, I went to bed when it was about 60/4 and was surprised to wake up to that score (breaking the pattern of waking up to good news). Williamson and co must have had a sense of deja vu seeing Stokes turning the tide against them at Lord's again ?

Still, NZ lost their last 6 for not many so it still seems finely balanced with England's longish tail.

Oh man, I only just saw the no-ball dismissal of Stokes on 1. Colin, through a combination of bad luck and lazy cricket has pretty single-handedly dropped the match for NZ (though tbf he'd had an exemplary test until yesterday).

Yeah great day and then topped it off with a concussed heel.

Could easily see the heel becoming a chronic problem at his advanced age too.

Williamson and delaying bringing a spinner on, then pulling him as soon as he's hit for a couple of boundaries.
Name a more iconic duo.

Haha it was definitely the right move to pull him after Stokes successfully went after him in that second over. Definitely not enough runs to play with to buy a wicket like that in this game.

He should've bowled earlier for sure though, and should've been given another bowl after Stokes got out.

Yeah NZ probably would've got rolled for about 80 without him in the first dig, then he got England's one batsman out cheaply. I reckon NZ would've been in a much worse position without him, day from hell notwithstanding.

Random thought, but what chance Macewell as a token spinner for the 2nd and 3rd tests?

Conway
Latham
Williamson
Nicholls
Mitchell
Blundell
Bracewell
Jamieson
Southee
Wagner
Boult

I assume Young will get another go and it will be

Young
Latham
Williamson
Conway
Nicholls
Mitchell
Blundell
Jamieson
Southee
Ajaz/Wagner/Henry
Boult

But it a way to get the 4 quicks and a bit of spin

Not sure it's that random, it's precisely why he's on tour IMO. I probably would've picked both Phillips and Ravindra ahead of him for this meme role but that's what this is. I'm sure it'll be very heavily considered especially now that Lord Colin is injured.

The speed England have scored at is a major problem and almost makes the 2nd new ball irrelevant unless we can somehow dry up runs while taking quick wickets. Anyway, despite some poor batting is has been a memorable test match with lots of swings. Great to have KJ back in beast mode. Hope he starts off when play resumes.

Might've been a 3rd day horror for CDG, but he was our best player on day 1.

Just watched the Spark extended highlights and it doesn't feature Stokes getting bowled on 1 off a no-ball. Wtf.
Just did exactly the same. Fmd they're terrible. Bunch of random singles down to fine leg but not one of the pivotal moments of the day.
