I don't know what the fuss about Latham really... yeah he got few low scores so does every opener. There has always been dearth of openers, ask England and they'll tell you. Since the retirement of Cook and Strauss they have trialed so many of them but with very little success. Consistent openers are hard to come by, it just comes with the territory. Also the way things have evolved in batting. If you try and be a proper test opener like say Richardson, Raval etc. chances are you're going to play for Black Caps in no more than 6-8 games in all. If you do play lot of white ball and also play test cricket there are bound to be some low scores. Batting from other formats do bleed into test format. This is where Warner is quite good, he also bags low scores but does not change his approach. I think Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are in the same boat perhaps. Probably the only change they make is playing closer to the body and playing late unlike in white ball cricket where you create width and go at the ball with hard hands.

The guys that will bowl at you are probably the best paid players from the opponents. They are paid big bucks to get the openers and make inroads. Unfortunately when opening you are bound to come across players that are in good form most of the times otherwise they won't be bowling with the new ball.

Latham will improve, he will score against every opponent but just has to go through this. No way of passing over it, have to go through it and get better.
If you were talking about a 20 test opener I'd agree but only John Wright has played more in the position. And within 2 years he'll probably pass him too. He might improve, he might not. People are just finally realizing up until now he always fails in important games, basically the test version of Guptill.

Young opening reminds me of the Bracewell days where you pick your best 5/6 batsmen and play them anywhere, regardless of their experience in that position.

Since we gave up on Raval (and sometimes I wonder if we should've) we've tried Blundell, Conway and now Young as openers.

Obviously Young is a middle order batsman and he looks a million bucks at times. I think it's harsh to judge him on his performances in a role he's not used to. I guess Larsen, stead and co just hope he'll adapt and they won't have to face hard facts like there's not really any openers knocking the door down domestically and that their other specialist opener is have a really **** time of it vs the traditionally strong nations.
The selector, coach and probably even our captains are very impatient of late with newbies. They want them to be like Kane or Boult from game one. Meanwhile Kane, Boult, Southee all took plenty of time to become consistent. The number of players they've trialed for like a single series has never been greater. Every series, I see new guys for the same role. Crazy stuff.... and then they'll go back to guys like Rutherford, CDG etc. Matter of time they'll bring back Santner, Raval, Sommerville and Sodhi in the test side. Probably for Pakistan series.

Never seen Bracewell not hit a drive for these many balls at domestic and leave so much. The man looks quite determined.

If Bracewell makes a decent contribution here, I guess I'll have to withdraw some of my disapproval of this XI. To be fair, I wouldn't exactly want Southee coming in at number eight in this situation.

I won't, because Bracewell is not a frontline bowler and picking only 3.5 bowlers is ridic.

We're going to struggle with the ball later in the test unless England kindly roll over twice before there are too many overs in our seamers' legs.

Broad vs bracewell is going to be interesting. Bracewell definitely showing signs of a proper batter with close leaves.

I rate Bracewell as a batsman much higher than as a bowler. I think his bowing is no good at all. Bowling at 80 k with barely much revs. Obviously want to be proved wrong.

That hard hands, playing away from the body and nicking off to slips, I've watched that so much at basin it's not funny.

Awful catching by England. Thanks for that. Otherwise we'd have probably been bowled out by now.

Hoping for 300 at least.

Bracewell to smash Leach here. I think he's a bloody good player of spin. He'd be quite happy to face Leach

Leach will be happy to find his opposite number is actually a top order batsman who averages 33 in FC.
You'd think England would use pacers vs Bracewell. He's struggled to time the ball vs pacers and they bowl Leach. Surely Bracewell will be so happy to face Leach.

An hour gone... We've been really lucky today. Should have been 240/8 if England held on to the catches

Can't help but think Foakes's genius skills as a keeper, rather like rumours of Mark Twain's death, have been greatly exaggerated.
Yeah, I'm kinda ready to call it a myth at this point, maybe another thing where he just aesthetically looks pleasing, but in actuality it's not that good. Can see Jos taking the gloves before long, got to fit with the theme of New England more.
