This NZ batting order really is a problem, I see in this game against Northants Chris Harris, a player who has won several games for NZ with the bat in the past, is down at 8. He is in there on 11 with only 4 overs to go, and he needs a while to get himself in before he scores freely, so he is not much use in that position.

I see our top order did quite badly again. A total of only 44 runs between the first 4 batsmen. In contrast, the next 3 (Oram, Cairns, McCullum) have all scored more than that individually and have totalled 154 runs between them.

I also see that this Northants bowler Adam Shantry now has a one day bowling average of 10.71. Rather spectacular (even though he has only played 3 games).

And one of those games was against Somerset... so it doesn't count really :)

But even slower in Somerset (with stupid accents too by the way ;)) because Somerset (as you yourself told me) recieve crap radio signals. :D:):p

My moan at Somerset for the day.
True, True... And a worse cricket team..

Although the accent (however stupid) isnt as pathetic as the East London/Essex filth.. And im in possession of neither, thank god..

My semi-counter rant for the day :)

Not a bad start.

Agreed, we really have to do something about the batting. Since all our best bowlers are over there (except perhaps Bruce Martin) we have to strengthen our batting.

My personal view is that Craig MacMillan has to go. From memory he has played about 150 ODI macthes, averages about 27, makes a good 40 or 60 every now and then. He just does not win us matches. Whereas Astle, Fleming, and Styris have won us matches recently. Our only other specialist batsman is Hamish Marshall, who is pretty new to the team, but is playing well despite doing virtually nothing at domestic level.

That's it, 4 specialist batsman. Astle and Fleming can be class players at times, Styris has done a great job batting at number 4, where I think he averages about 35. No more of this 'Styris is really a number 5' please. We *really* need more than 4 batsman.

I think Mathew Sinclair should be in the team. He can bat anywhere in the order and has improved his batting and mental approach to no end in my view. He has started to score more consistantly and quickly in recent times, had a solid domestic season, and has been playing well for his club in England.

As for Chris Harris...well if he plays he has to bat infront of Cairns and Oram in the order, he does need time to get himself going, although he has been told to bat in a more aggressive fashion.

Our middle order is strong enough with the likes of Cairns, Harris, Oram, and McCullum. We just need some top order batsman. No more all rounders, no more McCullum being sent in for some quick runs.

To my way of thinking, I'd say Harris has been bracketed with Vettori to start the matches. If Vettori can't play we'll need some more variation in our bowling for sure.

The West Indian bowling looks to be in a bad way.

Sussex 292/6 50 overs

Dwayne Smith 6.2 overs bowled. Is he injured?
No injury for Dwayne, who's bowling at the moment against Kent, but more problems in the bowling department.

Lawson and Best went for a combined 49 in the first 6 overs and there were 14 wides and 6 no balls in the first 11 overs.

The folly of excluding both Dillon and Collymore continues to be exposed.

I fear for England's prospects if Flintoff and Tresco are out
Key would be a good replacement for Tresco so no worries there, FLintoff on the other hand... EEK! :-O

I see Fleming is still on Tour so I guess he must be staying on for the Tri-Series..............

not sure if that's a good thing or not atm...........the top order & batting lineup has been changed for every limited overs warm up & has yet to settle into any sort of form...........

I see Macca has benefited from this and has managed to post what appears to be a few reasonable scores in the context of what has happened with the top order - making himself look indespensible (again).......... 8-)

not heard much about Sinclair...............surprising considering his domestic limited overs form at the end of the season........

I'm also a bit confused as to why McCullum has played in 2 out of 3 warm up games if he is to fly out b4 / during the ODIs - Hopkins has only played in the 1 game & is yet to have a bat!!!!!

no further news on Vettori so I suppose he is not in contention for at least the start of the series.............now where have we heard that b4?????? 8-)

the bowling continues to be a major headache with lack of penetration & Butler going for truck loads - I guess he hasn't made any changes to his length then..........

Collymore in particular would have been very handy in English conditions, especially because he played a bit of county cricket last year.

Yeah they keep changing the batting order, just like they did in the tests. MacMillan has so much talent, but he never makes scores against domestic teams.

Fleming is expected to play, he should be feeling better after seeing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert instead of playing against Northamptonshire.

Last I heard Vettori was doubtful for the first game. No great loss there. Butler is a huge worry...he just constantly pitches the ball short.

Probably didn't word it as clearly as I should have. I was suggesting that EITHER Dillon or Collymore should have gone to give Windies a fairly reliable 1/45 type bowler.

Sounds like Tino is an injury worry now and, despite the comfortable win yesterday, 40 extras is also a massive concern.

2 legbyes though. :p Surely we can't do much about that.

Wow slightly surprised no-one has mentioned the two players drafted into the England team as cover for the injuries yet.

For those who haven't actually seen yet... R.Clarke gets back in and a surprise package of M.Powell - So Ian Bell misses out again which might surpise a few after they selectors said he was very close and unlucky to miss out... obviously Warwicks are so desprate to hold onto him for their game v Kent this week :p
