***Official*** 1st Test at The Gabba

Oh dear, unless we get 400+ in our first innings I can see this being a Lords-esque thumping.

It's obvious to say England need to restrict Ponting and send him back early but it's pivotal they get rid of him before Hussey strides to the crease. The pair of them just give absolutely nothing away, at least with Martyn and Clarke you can just wait for them to give their wicket away. With Gilly also struggling with the bat since the last ashes series, save for bashing Bangladesh, the middle order still has a soft underbelly to be exposed. Some quick runs up until tea tomorrow and then it's over to you, Warney.

Must admit, that new hot spot thingy is pretty cool. Commentary was piss poor as usual.
Really? I didn't think it added much tbh, but I was listening to the radio with the tv sound turned down for the most part.

I mean, if you have super slow-mo, why the hell do you need that thing to tell if you got an edge? The super slow-mo shows the revs on the ball changing so I dunno how much it adds.

Good gimmick though. One thing I thought 9 did well here was to go straight to the toss before carrying on with 30 minutes of sh*t, whereas in the past they've shown us the toss at 10.45 and pretended it was live. Dunno if the 3 commentators adds much, but if it means I hear less of David "My claim to fame is getting hit in the cobblers by Thommo" Lloyd, great.

On the cricket, if Australia had Flintoff they would never lose a match. What an inspirational player he is. He made every other bloke look ordinary in the attack and was the only one who looked threatening.

Ponting a genuine star. Will hold every record in the batting book by the time he retires, apart from beating Bradman's average. Phenomenal.

bashing Bangladesh? thats not what i would call that innings he did

anyawys you'd do pretty well to get Australia all out under 450 here.... with Clarke [in good form] Gilchrist [will love this pitch] Lee [loves batting at the gabba, averages 70+] Warne [always dangerous] Clark and McGrath [both in surprisingly pretty good form with the bat :P ]

72.69 - Ricky Ponting's average at the Gabba. In 17 innings he has now scored 945 runs, with four centuries. (Click here for Ponting's record at Brisbane before this Test.)

93.17 - The average partnership between Ponting and Michael Hussey. In nine stands, they've already put together 100 or more runs three times

wow

Giles might hit a bowling average of 40 during this series as well, which would be a unique achievement among specialist bowlers with over 50 test matches. Currently 39.68.

It could do, but i thought he actually didn't bowl too badly today, so he might save himself from it.

Not saying that it adds anything, just that it's pretty cool. Although if they started overusing it, it would be annoying.

Meh, depressing. Freddie bowled like a hero as usual but the rest were average to awful. TBF Gilo has bowled worse, though I still think Fletcher is looking at his averages the wrong way round, 20.72 and 39.60.

Early signs for the English are ominous.

Only caught snatches of it on the radio and the TV at work today, but looks like a solid day for the Aussies, and that England, Harmison in particular, have got a bit of thinking to do today. Obviously it was a great toss to win, but the Aussies certainly capitalised on that luck.

Big onya to Ponting, what a champ, what a way to stamp your authority on the series after the criticism he copped after the last series - with runs coming I think the rest of his performance as captain will click.

Good to see Langer getting some runs in his come back, particularly after I wrote him off in another thread. I might still be right (hope not) but it was great to see him back and doing what he does best. Although he'll be kicking himself for throwing away a 100 given the pitch and bowling. Hayden and Martyn will also be kicking themselves for throwing away solid starts.

Definitely game on - only one day out of 25, but the Aussies have certainly placed themselves in the box seat.

Taped the whole day's play, going to be watching it tonight. With ads and breaks fast forwarded, I reckon I can watch the whole day in approx. 3 hours... :) :) :)

Ponting continues his run fest in test cricket and so does Michael Hussey, England bowled quite well with the 2nd new ball but it will be hard to get these guys out. Harmison was crap, Hoggard was average, Anderson wasn't as bad as his figures suggest, Flintoff was bloody inspirational while Giles and Pietersen both bowled suprisingly well. Good to see some new technology being added. I was a bit disappointed Martyn couldn't go on and it was great to see Langer in the runs, he is by far better than Jaques and the selectors faith has been rewarded.

Would rather have Mahmood in the side than Harmison TBH.
Was just thinking about Mahmood, hope he comes in for the second test. While he'll probably concede a few runs I think he might create a few more wicket-taking opportunities than we saw today. Don't know who he should replace though...spoilt for choice.

****ing poor shot selection by Martyn. What was he thinking?? Straight to him!!

Entertaining day's play nevertheless.

English folk: Why didn't Collingwood bowl??
