Fantastic stuff from Ponting. Absolutely chanceless, and has looked totally at home against every bowler. 9 centuries in 12 tests now, and made his "poor form" look like a joke. Only 3 behind Tendulkar's record now too.

Just looks rock solid at the moment. Going to be a huge series for him.

One or two in the air, LBW shout. But that`s being picky.

Different definitions, I suppose. For me a chance is a potential catch, a really close LBW shout etc. There was that one Giles LBW shout that would never have been given because he was so far forward, and a couple of shots in the air that were never near fielders. The only one that was genuinely uncontrolled IMO was the slash down to third man off Bell for a boundary, and there were no fielders in the region.

Either way, it was certainly a very controlled innings.

Pietersen gets through his overs quickly and isn't that bad. If Flintoff wants some quick overs before the new ball I can see why he'd bowl him. Bell was a strange one though with Collingwood available.

Ponting now has 6 centuries in 2006, and the record is 7, held by Aravinda, Viv and now Yousuf after his 7th one today. Ponting's got 7 more potential innings in the year, so that could be under threat.

i guess most of us have realised that no swing has been available for England's bowlers & has we all know that was a key weapon in the arsenal of England's bowlers in 2005. I reckon it will be the same throughout the summer, so Fletcher & co have to think quick or the seamers with the exception of the big Flintoff might drop dead in Australia..

Great day for Australia, totally in control. Langer and Ponting gunning it, everyone has that look in their eyes. England on the other hand look devoid of spirit, Harmison and Hoggard bowling crap and Giles and KP doing ok. Flintoff, the only man to really stand up. Hopefully this is sign of things to come over the summer. Can't wait for tommorow. Ponting for the double and Hussey to go far and Warne will be deadly.

Bowdens nose scratch though, jeez, he knows how to give a man a heart attack.

Perfect day for Australia. Top and middle order both contributed well, the most important batsman in the side is in devastating touch and England's bowlers look flat and unthreatening.

The pitch is a very good one for batting and it was a crucial toss, but it's not a road and shouldn't be that tough to take wickets on later in the test. There's plenty of pace and bounce and heaps of turn for day 1, and England will have to bat really well to get anything out of the test from here. First hour tomorrow is crucial, and England really need a couple of early wickets and to hopefully have the innings close to wrapped up by lunch. Anything under 500 isn't a disaster, as it's definitely a 350-400 pitch, but if Australia bat until tea it's over.

Flintoff carried the whole team, though Giles was pretty good too and will be crucial if England do get to bowl at Australia again in the third innings. I really can't see him running through a side though, and it's hard to see England taking 20 wickets with the way things stand at the moment, especially considering that Adelaide and Perth are likely to be very flat decks. Harmison was hopeless and aside from the occasional good delivery Hoggard and Anderson were average too, with Anderson in particular releasing the pressure with a four ball way too often. The fact that Pietersen looked more likely to take a wicket than most of the front-liners says plenty.

Oh YEA!! Complete ownage by Australias batsmen today... they look 438 times more professional than their opponents... eat **** poms..pwned by dads army

with Gilly/Warne/Lee to come expect some quick runs as well and if we do get to 500 i reckon we'll get it quickly....

whenever we bowl... maybe tomorrow... McGrath the grandpa will teach those poms a few things
1) move it on pitches that aren't really going for them
2) hit the seam
3) after bowling 1 good ball do it again and again

and Warney :O he'll be bloody hard to play on this wicket!!!! i mean just looking how KP has bowled

Ffs, how gun are Ponting and Hussey? Anything under 500 from here would be a failure tbh.

Great first day for Australia. Some great batting from Ponting (hopefully he can get a double), Hussey and Langer. The English bowlers were pretty bad though with only Giles, Flintoff and KP looking like taking a wicket. Hopefully Australia will get over 500 with Clarke and Gilchrist to come. The wicket has already produced some spin and Warne should be able to take a lot of wickets.

Ponting approaching a career average of 60, at 59.13 now. He'd have to be the first guy to average above 60 from 50+ tests in a long time, and the first ever from 100+ tests. Giles might hit a bowling average of 40 during this series as well, which would be a unique achievement among specialist bowlers with over 50 test matches. Currently 39.68.

Another interesting one - Hoggard's average in Australia in test cricket. 72.83.

Must admit, that new hot spot thingy is pretty cool. Commentary was piss poor as usual.
Agreed. Even our science teacher was impressed by it today.
