Well, it seems his foot got "stuck". A lot has been made of the problem with Brisbane's turf which, sand-based, doesn't have any "purchase" or root structure and the foot just gets wedged into the ground. Absolutely lethal. You can't slide at Brisbane, end of. And he's going off to receive treatment - some ice and a shot of whiskey no doubt. Ed Joyce is on.
50.4 Flintoff to Ponting, 1 run, pushed off the back foot just past Pietersen in the cover whose foot gets stuck in the turf, ala Simon Jones a few years ago. And in fact the physio has come onto the pitch to attend to him.
How does he know that? 8-)

Ian Chappell surprised at how good Giles is. Follow the warm-ups Ian?

In fact, I claim a superior status to everyone else on CW. Forever.
Weren't you saying after the NSW game that he was crap and only got his wickets caught on the fence? :p

Giles did bowl pretty well in that session. Chappell obviously has no idea a lot of the time, and I don't think Giles was all that aggressive, but going around the wicket to the right-handers is an improvement, and he is certainly flighting the ball more when compared to last Ashes. If he bowls like that all series he'll go alright, and may well end up bowling in tandem with Panesar at the SCG at least.

Even session in the end, that one. Would have been England's if they'd gotten Ponting instead, but you'd take 2/100 three times on day 1 here if possible. Flintoff finally got a bit of support.

5/340 at stumps is my tip, with Gilchrist and Ponting unbeaten.

edit: Also, going to stick my neck out and tip Gilchrist for a century tomorrow. He'll have a good time of it on this wicket I think, provided he gets past the second new ball. Flintoff still bowling very well, but Gilchrist won't have to deal with reverse swing this time around.

can't think of a more solid pair to be at the crease, this Ponting/Hussey can really hurt England in this final session i fear.

A feature of this Australian innings has been the large amount of deliveries left outside the off-stump, and even a few on the leg-side that had the chance of being edged/gloved to the `keeper. Definite improvement already on the 2005 effort. We`ve been patient and put away the bad balls.
