New Zealand Domestic Season 2006/07

Otago have some good bowlers though, with McMillan, Scott and McCullum all reasonably experienced. I don't know too much about Kyle Hogg but I'm sure he'll get through a few overs, so I think we have the bowling resources to cope against a pretty damn classy Canterbury batting lineup. Craig Smith is fairly inexperienced but I'm sure he'll be able to grow into the season. We have two left arm fast medium bowlers, two right arm fast medium bowlers and one right arm off spinner. Reasonably good variety. I just read Kyle Hogg is the grandson of Sonny Ramadhin, you learn something new every day.

I played against Hogg once in U13 cricket, absolutely hammered us with the bat, don't really remember him being outstanding with the ball though.

Regardless, he bowled much better this year that he has done for a few years. (he had big injury problems for a couple of years) Not particularly quick, tops out about 80-82 but swings the ball and should be effective with the new cherry.

Providing he gets a go at the new ball, I would've thought that McMillan and Scott would get first go seeing as how they are the two senior bowlers.

Otago going really well here, 434/4, which is always an encouraging score considering the drabb we ussually get in our domestic season. If I remember correctly it started off with reasonable scores last year and then went downhill anyway. Fairly inexperienced bowling attack apart from Astle, McMillan and Harris who are by no way wicket takers. Will be interesting to see when they will declare.

Otago are 601/9, with C Smith falling just short of a well deserved 50. Greg Todd reached 160 before being caught and bowled by Chris Harris and Kyle Hogg got off to a poor start with the bat, registering a 4 ball duck. Bradley Scott is currently 52*. The dibbly dobblers have taken most of the wickets for Canterbury with Nathan Astle getting 1, Chris Harris 2, Todd Astle 2 and Craig McMillan 1.

Otago retired for 601, and now Brendon McCullum and Todd Astle are opening the batting. James McMillan gets the first go with the new ball.

Canterbury have been reduced to 144/4 after Brendan McCullum hit a quickfire 67. Left arm seamer James McMillan and off spinner Narthan McCullum, younger brother of Brendan both picked up 2 wickets. Interesting to note Kyle Hogg's first two overs went for 18 runs.

Gutted for Smithy that he couldn't get through to his maiden FC 50. He'd been working hard on his batting during the offseason - looks like it paid off.

Him and Scott both put on some quick runs, but it's always a shame to see a bowler miss out on a 50 or 100 when they deserve one. Do you know anything about Smith? A bit more information on him Volty?

He took wickets at a pretty healthy average playing Youth ODI's, but all I know about him are his stats really. Replacement for David Sewell?

James McMillan is Craig's cousin.

Craig Smith is the oldest of three brothers - all of who play cricket - in fact, all three of them played a game of Hawke Cup last year. The youngest one, Robbie - who is in Year 12 at St Kevin's College, is probably the best all-rounder (although I'm maybe being harsh on Geoff because he smashed me around the park last year).

Craig's into his fourth year of a PE degree (if I remember rightly) and is based permanently in Dunedin this year after playing the odd game up in Oamaru last season - good left-armer who jags it about off the seam. He's also lifted his pace a notch over the last year or so.

Does he play rugby for the 1st XV?

Make sure I nail the little bugger next year. Canterbury end the day on 330/7, McMillan scoring 101 and Harris still on 103*. The latter part of the day was rain affected and didn't produced much rain, James McMillan has been the main wicket taker, with 5/77 off 20 overs.
