According to current records South Africa's first Test was also the initial first-class match in the country. It is probably more relevant to list the leading run-scorers and wicket-takers during the period of isolation between March 1970 and April 1992. Again only first-class matches in South Africa count.

South Africa Batsmen (March 1970 to April 1992)
Graeme Pollock 11706 runs @ 56.00. 35 centuries
Jimmy Cook 11342 @ 41.39. 27 centuries
Peter Kirsten 11046 @ 42.16. 28 centuries

South Africa Bowlers
Vintcent van der Bijl 631 wickets @ 16.53. Wpm 5.2
Garth le Roux 445 @ 19.54. Wpm 4.4
Alan Kourie 421 @ 23.44. Wpm 3.3

Hey @peterhrt can you provide me any information on Abdul (Abdus) Salaam? Haven heard of him before but just the name, don't even know if his bowling style and Cricinfo also isn't helping there. Thanks

He was Abdus as you say. Bowled medium pace with the keeper standing up. Could get a bit of lift in the right conditions. Liked long spells. Scored a couple of first-class hundreds, and was a decent slip catcher.

Played in India from at least 1917 until early 1932 when he was overlooked for India's inaugural tour of England, following a trial match at Patiala in which he took four wickets in the first innings. Travelled to England that year anyway and stayed. Played for the London Gymkhana club until 1940.

Took all ten wickets for 33 runs for Indian XI v Punjab XI at Rawalpindi in 1919. It wasn't designated a first-class match. Captained the Muslims on occasions in Indian domestic competition.

Inaugural WTC champions.
Only team to whitewash India in India.
One of only 2 teams to ever win a test by 1 run.
South Africa have also whitewashed India in India.

West Indies have won 3-0 in India twice but over a longer series.

What an interesting post! Lol at how Australian domestic had produced 2 bowlers who hit 100 wickets, but not a single batsman to hit 500 runs. Really was a bowlers game back then! Unless you were WG Grace

Yeah that’s why he was so revolutionary, the first great dominant bat.

It was remarkable how little cricket had been played in Australia to this point. Travel was not easy. Most of the matches with English touring sides were against odds (not 11 a-side).

It took another twenty years for Australian batting to develop fully, but the Aussies largely made up the gap with innovative bowling and superior wicket-keeping and fielding.
