I do not think any batsman except the Don was ahead of his peers like Jack Hobbs was before the first war.
it took multiple illnesses, a surgery and him to be near 40 for him to drop to the level of Hammond and Sutcliffe, which is absolutely insane. IIRC Bradman (who saw an old Hobbs, all the way to Sachin) considered Hobbs the technically finest player.

I did not know this.

Sobers batting. You can nitpick about NZ all you like.

If we ignore his teen years, he basically has a near 13 year period averaging well over 60. That's such a period of outright dominance it just outstrips Marshall.

And he was more rated and celebrated as a bat than Marshall as a bowler frankly.

So you basically think all the top tier bats are better than the top tier bowlers; in general??

Sobers has a 14 year period averaging 66.49 iirc. Pretty insane.

Yeah. Because reaching that level to me is more difficult with so much batting competition. So Tendulkar, Hobbs, Sobers and Viv are ahead of Marshall, McGrath and Hadlee who are ahead of Lara, Hutton and Smith.

I used to be bowler first because of team value but I realise that is inherently biased.

Viv’s “failure” in NZ can be excused. He played one series(3 Tests & 4 innings).

Gary Sobers has a dismal record against NZ.
12 Tests.
18 innings.
404 runs.
Avg of 23.
1 century and zero fifty.

Sobers record in NZ is even more pathetic.
7 Tests.
10 innings.
151 runs.
Avg of 15.
0 fifties or centuries.

1st tour.
4 Tests.
5 innings.
81 runs.
Avg of 16.

2nd tour
3 Tests.
5 innings.
70 runs.
Avg of 14.
