Didn’t Sobers playing in 1960s where the pitches were super easy to bat? Isn’t that the argument used for many for Barrington’s great record?

it took multiple illnesses, a surgery and him to be near 40 for him to drop to the level of Hammond and Sutcliffe, which is absolutely insane. IIRC Bradman (who saw an old Hobbs, all the way to Sachin) considered Hobbs the technically finest player.
Still rated Barry the greatest opener he saw.

Just saying.

Yeah. Because reaching that level to me is more difficult with so much batting competition. So Tendulkar, Hobbs, Sobers and Viv are ahead of Marshall, McGrath and Hadlee who are ahead of Lara, Hutton and Smith.

I used to be bowler first because of team value but I realise that is inherently biased.
I agree with the names and the groupings (not the order per say, but that's nitpicking)

The bowlers though for me has to be higher for team value, plus think Marshall was a better bowler than any batsman not nicknamed the Don.

And yeah, Lara, Smith & Hutton are basically aligned with Steyn, Ambrose and the two spinners.

But of the elite 8. (Sobers boosted because of catching and bowling)

Bradman | Sobers | Marshall | Hobbs | McGrath| Hadlee | Tendulkar | Richards

Purely as a batsman though Sobers is muddled with Sachin and Viv.
