Mahela cashed in more in favourable conditions (averaging 59 at home) and occasionally went big (seven double centuries) which Mark Waugh literally never did (highest score 153). Mahela was quite conditions dependent (averaging under 36 in Africa, Europe and Oceana), but his record in these countries is barely worse than Mark Waugh's career record.

Mark Waugh looked great and would often play one outstanding innings per series to keep himself in the side. But he was rarely consistent and very fortunate to play over 100 tests at the expense of Lehmann, Law, Hodge, Love, Bevan and Martyn.

It's definitely Mahela.
