technically wouldn't Smith averaging 43 for a whole decade in an uber bowling friendly era put him ahead of Tendulkar? but his peak wasn't as long, hmmmm

Imo Hutton is just a class apart on tough wickets, probably the GOAT on them (bar top 2) and a level above the others imo, but then again, Hutton's weakness is Viv's strength. feel like I rate Hutton equals with Tendulkar/Viv/Sobers now.
I am mostly in agreement, I think all 9 are elite and without exception were the best and most dominant of their eras.

The latter 3 / 4 just either haven't separated themselves fully from the pack and still have something to prove (Smith), wasn't quite as consistent (Lara) or lacked the extra gear (Hutton), and the obvious (Richards)

Just splitting hairs. All these guys are still above the rest and for me, that special level of elite.

GAVASKAR MUCH BETTER THAN VIV!? Oh hell nah
This is what I mean by revisionist history.

In the 70's Sunny wasn't in the same conversation as Barry far less the Master Blaster.

In the 80's he was pretty much on par with Greenidge.

These things were weren't even really up for dispute while they played.

He is much better than Viv at home though
I sincerely wonder if you ever actually watched cricket or any of these players in particular.

And it's the trendy thing to downplay Viv, but he's closer to Tendulkar than to Lara.

And as far as I'm concerned Lara is the best batsman I've ever seen.

Whats the gap without all the useless runs Viv churned out on roads in draws?
.roads made up a smaller of a percentage of any batsman in this argument, probably with the exception of Hutton? And even then it's arguable.

No one faced more roads and sub par attacks than Bradman, Tendulkar like Sobers didn't have the most challenging home tracks and Tendulkar had a entire dead pitch era and his decent share of minnows. Hobbs pre WWI may had had the toughest, if improving conditions, but faced the least amount of great bowlers. For the other half of his career post war, it was flat and even the bowling was less challenging. As per his own admission btw.
And let's not pretend that Hutton faced Lindwall and Miller everyday either.

So what's the argument?
