katich over jaques

Katich really need to get a big score soon if he is to keep his spot. His role is to bat the innings to hold it together while someone blazes at the other end. I agree that Hodge should not have been picked as Ponting's replacement. Jaques to open with Katich at 3 a better option.

That said, I would be picking Jaques now. He is in the form of his life and we need to see what he's made of now against good opposition. The rest of the batting order is fairly settled so no need to worry about that.

How so? Symonds is one of the top ODI batsmen in the world. He would probably make a world XI as a batsman alone, or at least go very close.

Watson might well fight out an all-rounder's spot with Hopes, White etc, but not with Symonds. His place at number 5 is secure for several years at least.
I do withdraw that comment. I believe there may be room in the Australian ODI side form both Symonds and Watson, especially in the World Cup 15. With Symonds you have a lot of options, ie batting, fielding, off spin and medium pace. With Watson you have batting and sharp fast medium bowling. If we intend to have a tail that can wag all the way to the end then leaving our a specialist bowler such as Bracken, and replacing him with Watson would be the way to go.

If Katich's role is to bat the innings, then he fails at that role, because he just doesn't seem to do it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind opening with either Jaques/Gilchrist or Jaques/Hussey. IMHO, Ponting is good enough at #3 to steady the innings if Australia loses quick wickets, or to build upon the foundation set by the openers to push the scoring along quickly.

Even though Watson's been tried in that role many times and it's been shown it's not one that suits him?

yep im also in the boat ( growing into a ship now) of people that can't justify the selection of katich over jaques. Jaques has the unique ability to be both explosive (numerous hundreds in ING cup) and be a patient builder of innnings (90 odd against Pak A in a seaming pitch.) Due to his ability to change his temperament according the situation he will be an ideal foil to Gilchrist. Katich is doing good atm scorin a lot of 50's but when there's a replacement who can score big at near a run a ball strike rate as well as play subdued innings, why deny him the opportunity??

On the bowling front, while katich bowls useful left-armers both clarke and definately hogg are a lot better in that department.

my ideal ODI aussie side
1. A Gilchrist (k)
2. P Jaques
3. R Ponting (c)
4. D Martyn
5. M Clarke
6. A Symonds
7. M Hussey
8. B Lee
9. B Hogg/D Cullen
10. N Bracken
11. G McGrath

reserve batsman: M Cosgrove
reserve a/o: S Watson
reserve bowler: S Tait/M Lewis
reserve keeper: B Haddin

Excellent squad, and first XI. I like the idea of Tait being there or thereabouts. I think one area where Australia are slightly vulnerable is in the closing overs. Tait's ability to both 'reverse' the ball, and bowl yorkers, goes a long way toward addressing that weakness. Having said that, he could go for ten an over too.

I heard one of the commentators the other night say "What has Katich done wrong to be dropped from the team?" And I thought "Well what has Jaques done wrong not to be in the team"

Yeah. I think that it should never be a question of "what has X done wrong". Rather, it should be a question of, 'well if you put Jacques in the team for Katich, will it improve the team?'

In my view, absolutely it will. It's question of whether the team is being improved, not whether the incumbent has done something wrong.

The thread title makes me chuckle - sounds like someone taking a tumble.

"How'd yer get the black eye, Bruce?"
"Well, Bruce, I was chasin' this Shiela an' I tripped over a gladdy. Went Katich over Jaquesie."
