Yeh its pretty odd, I mean Kallis is never called Jakes..

They have learned the Sri Lankans pretty well, so why do they still say "Boater" and "Van der Waath" when the south africans play? (Its Boor-ta and Van der Vaart)
Spelt different though. Phil Jaques says the correct way to say it is actually "Jakes". Whereas, Kallis' first name is spelt 'Jacques'. Hence the "arrrrr" (like at the doctor's).

OK, so I made that all up

No, that's the reason, I think - spelt different, said different.

There's a difference. The few decent innings Katich has played recently (the ugly fifty in New Zealand when no-one else in the top 4 was firing) and the 60 or so against Sri Lanka at the Telstra Dome. Both he and Martyn were incredibly fortune with their strokeplay and running between the wickets. It really don't rate that innings. Jaques has already impressed me more in that one innings than Katich has done in his entire ODI career.

Katich is a good batsman, but Jaques is scoring more runs, more consistantly and faster than him at the moment.

WC Australian XI
A Gilchrist+
P Jaques
R Ponting (c)
D Martyn
A Symonds
M Clarke
M Hussey
B Lee
J Gillespie
D Cullen / N Bracken
G McGrath

12th G Hogg

Well Australia should have a team where excellent players miss out on spots because there is so much talent, not where mediocre ones like Katich get a free ride..

Cosgrove should be the backup batsman for the WC too.
hmm i think he'll find it tough the break into the side for the WC TBH, cause other than a possible starting XI out of a 15-man squad:

Jaques
Gilly
Ponting
Martyn
Symo
Clarke
Hussey
Lee
Hogg
Dizzy
McGrath

backup would come from Watson, Cullen or Hopes (depending on whether the selectors want a 2nd spinner for the WC), Bracken, Haddin. Really cant see where he would go?

Haddin will not go as part of the 15 i dont think. Hopes or Watson and Cosgrove would be mu backups to that 13 above.

nope David Hussey would be a mile ahead of him he is 2nd im run scored in the ING cup making 498 runs @ 99 and has had more than 1 good season unlike Cosgrove.

Crosgrove might have an advantage over others if he keeps opening the batting, Australia have enough specialist middle order batsmen. But if there is a 15 man sqaud then it probably will be a toss up between Haddin and a reserve batsmen.

nah i think the selectors will want to have backup for gilchrist for that long tournament, really cant see him not going.

It's interesting that Tait isn't getting much of a look-in for any of these WC teams. He's always been a successful OD bowler - certainly more than a FC specialist like Dorey. I could see him making the squad.

What do people think about Shane Watson as an opener. He is a very proper batsman who is really unsuited to the down the order slogging but I think he would appreciate the gaps in the field during the early overs and it would give him time to build an innings.

Watson did a pretty good job opening the batting for Tasmania at the start of his career, so i don't think he would be a bad option. The only problem is that it would mean that Gilchrist might then have to bat at 8 and therefore be completely wasted.

Tait may have raw pace but without direction that's pointless in ODIs, he may be able to beat a few batsmen by sheer pace but if he's going at 7 an over it's pointless.

I have heard evidence to the fact Watson is more a classical-type batsmen rather than a slogger but opening the batting and coming on first change (or even opening the bowling if lee's injured) is just too much for one person really.

I think the selectors are showing a remarkable sense of loyalty when it comes to Simon Katich. I can remember, quite some time ago some people were even of the belief that he was being groomed as the next captain (or future) of Australia.

Since then he has unfortunately become one of those players in both forms of the game who is seen as a 'super-sub' someone to call upon who can be relied upon to hold the fort whilst someone else is injured or taking a break.

It is a sad state of affairs for Katich but I think he is going to fall into the same catagory as Lehmann, Love, Law etc. Players who held down the fort whilst the selectors favourites were unavailable.

With that said I really don't see him being a suitable opener for Australia in the ODI side. I personally would rather see the likes of Jacques and M Hussey opening and Katich coming in down the order.

My perfect Australian ODI side would look like:

P Jacques
M Hussey
R Ponting *
D Martyn
M Clarke
A Gilchrist +
S Katich
S Watson
B Hogg (or Warne if he decides to return)
B Lee
G McGrath

12th man ... take your pick!

i'd drop katich for symonds. symonds explosive hitting is an incredibly potent weapon to have. i'd like to drop Martyn too, he doesnt really offer anything special, mayb a bowling allrounder . .. if one ever turns up . ... hehe

interesting option, but australai have enogh decent openers but he should be batting in the top 5 for australia in both forms then i'm sure he'll really start batting well for australia.

well i'm not forgeting about him he defenately has a chance but he'll have to battle it out with Dizzy over the next year since i'm pretty ok with Bracken in the team. But i wouldn't want both him & lee playing together ATST.
