Just How Good Was Barry Richards?

State Vice-Captain
Spinners Goel, Shivalkar and Vaman Kumar played 2 Tests between them. How highly are they rated in India?

Ranji Trophy stats:

Bedi 403 wickets @ 15.00. 5.3 wpm
Goel 637 @ 17.28. 5.2 wpm
Prasanna 370 @ 17.29. 5.2 wpm
Shivalkar 361 @ 17.78. 4.9 wpm
Vaman Kumar 418 @ 18.13. 4.9 wpm
Venkat 530 @ 18.22. 5.5 wpm
Gupte 121 @ 18.71. 5.0 wpm
Chandra 437 @ 19.11. 5.8 wpm
From what i have read from senior indian sports journalists who covered cricket that era goel and shivlakar couldn't get spot into indian team because of bedi and prasanna. Dont think anybody remembers them now

The Sub-continent doesn't have a mortgage on 'square turners'. A lot of county wickets were prepared to favour their spinners yet Richards more than proved himself in these conditions. As @kyear2 pointed out, he did face his fair share of Underwood who, at the time, was regarded by many as the premier spinner in the world.
Yeah, so first it's spin, but against the best spinner in the world in spinning conditions isn't enough.

Which of the greats of the era struggled in the SC? Even if SA had continued playing they wouldn't have played India at all.

This is taking analysis by checklist a little far tbh.

The SC would have been a far greater challenge for pacers rather than batsmen imho

All I ask is you be consistent about WSC because you didn't factor it in before and trashed Imran's record in Aus without even mentioning it.

Now you readily use it to boost Barry because he doesn't have an intl career aside from that.

Anyways, point is made, proceed with your Barry boosting.
I have consistently used WSC to boost Chappell's fast fowling bona fides, to highlight the continuation of Viv's peak and Barry's dominance.

You believe that it erases all of Imran's other tour performances to Australia and proves something.

I legitimately do not want to discuss Imran with you. He's a top 6 pacer, a top 10 bowler and the 2nd best all rounder of all time. I don't know what else you want me to say

Post war, and specifically the 70's through 90's. Australia, England, South Africa and (for a brief period, and more bowler than conditions) the Caribbean were the toughest places for batsmen and the most helpful for fast bowlers. There's a reason the proving ground for pacers was seen to be the SC and specifically India, but the ultimate test for bats was SENA (as is constantly referenced).
The ball swings and moves in England and SA, bounce and seam in Australia. Generalizations of course, but mostly true.

And again, you know this.

Just admit you didn't include WSC when discussing Imran in Australia. Maybe it was an oversight. It's not that hard. The rest are our discussed differences.
