Should I have read more? I'll go back and study the surrounding posts more closely and may have to retract the above statement It's one of the dangers of popping in and out of here I think...this time I forgot to wear protection.

My belief is every bowler can easily chuck during a spell and get away with it unless his action is horribly wrong, the bio-mechanic test only works if the bowler has got an action that is beyond any doubt and something he can't correct during the test, otherwise i don't think it takes much for any bowler to bend his elbow a tad more than usual to get that extra leverage during the game every now and then, Botha' action is almost same as it was before, he might have made some minor changes and got himself cleared during the bio-mechanic tests, now if his action still looks like this after getting cleared by the ICC, then one can say there isn't much that can be done in this regard.

I don't think it's that simple though...it's difficult to change your action to throw one in the middle of a match unless it's something you regularly do anyway as far as I can see. Have you ever tried to chuck on in the nets? I bowl much faster and more accurate with a normal action than an attempted throw.

With Matt on this one. Given Botha's been reported previously and actually banned for a period for chucking (source: BBC) I don't think it's a huge or unreasonable leap to suspect he may occasionally exceed the tolerance limit for elbow flexion.

Re his bent arm on delivery: is he unable to straighten his arm fully? It'd be peculiar that he chose to use such an action if not.

Fortunately for the good of the game Johan could never be called in a match and will then go on to undergo biomechanical tests and be passed. The ICC are awesome.

There could be cases where blokes might be doing it deliberately or it is easily possible too that when a bloke strives to that extra bit of leverage during a spell, he might be over the legal degree of allowed flex, and the bowler might not realise this, that's where this problem is hard to spot or eradicate completely.

We all know who chucks the ball: Murali, Botha, Shabbir, etc etc. Those who are cleared simply demonstrate by their continued presence in the game that the 15% rule is ludicrous.

So what should the rule state? Bearing in mind that every international bowler bar Ramnaresh Sarwan bent their arm more than the original rules said.

Alternatively, keep a percentage rule but reduce the percentage substantially below 15% which as we all know was introduced to allow Murali to keep playing. There are some truly appalling actions which have been given the all-clear under the 15% rule.
