because even if you lop off the early and late years, Sachin played more years and tests than virtually any other ATG batsman. 19 years, 160 odd tests, averaged ~60.
If you exclude first and last 3 years
Sachin : 163 Tests. 13866 runs @ 58. 49 tons
Lara : 89 Tests. 8086 runs @ 52. 22 tons
Sunny : 92 Tests. 7483 runs @ 50. 26 tons.
Viv : 81 Tests. 5381 runs @ 49. 15 tons.
Sobers : 72 Tests. 7021 runs @ 63. 24 tons

Being better for longer is more useful in real cricket.

If Tendulkar was good enough at 17 to already improve his team and Viv wasn't he deserves credit for that in a comparison with him, not rating down because it made his average worse.

Same when they got older. If Tendulkar was still improving his team by playing on and Viv was stinking it up, that counts in his favour.

The most overrated players here were either too **** to be selected young or retired early, because it gives them pretty averages.

Why will you remove Viv Richards' first 3 years?
Okay 2 years.

Sachin : 174 Tests. 14700 runs @ 57. 50 tons.
Sunny : 102 Tests. 8062 runs @ 49. 27 tons.
Lara : 108 Tests. 9850 runs @ 53. 26 tons.
Richards : 98 Tests. 7378 runs @ 54. 23 tons.
Sobers : 81 Tests. 7355 runs @ 59. 25 tons.

Sachin averaged 41 in 1990.
Sachin averaged 47 in 2011.

In between he played 3+ Tests in a year 20 times and he was able to have an average of 40+ 18 times and averaged 50+ 12 times. Insane consistency & longevity

Smith would have a hard time averaging 56 in the 80's.
I always thought that his dodgy technique never really got sufficiently stress tested against pace in form.

For some reason even when he faced ostensibly quality pacers somehow they werent really firing at full capacity, current series excepted.

Like he has a ton against Steyn which gave him a good series, he gets credit for it but honestly Steyn bowled absolute rubbish that innings. He has a ton at home against Rabada again who was bowling rubbish that series. He scored a ton against Bumrah at home in 2021 but Bumrah wasn't really 100 percent fit.

He scored two tons this series though that absolutely are quality given Bumrahs form even if it was a low yield series.
