I brought up Allan Donald because I saw his entire career and during his playing days he was considered on par if not better than Curtly Ambrose or Glen McGrath. Statistically speaking, his record is more complete(may lack longevity) than both of them but today he is ranked below them.

Donald also lacks a fifer in the SC, plus the relatively average record in Aus given they were the best side in the world is a blot.

He played 7 Tests in India/Pak/SL and has one fifer

Ambrose played 6 Tests in Pak/SL had has one fifer as well

McGrath played 17 Tests in India/Pak/SL and has just one fifer as well

Agreed.
Yeah don’t rate Amby very highly in the SC. Mcgrath was better since he faced a superior lineup to what Donald did in 2001, but even he is not Steyn/Marshall level in the SC

Then he will be demerited for not enough of a career sample or length.

He will go down as a normal great/ATVG like Garner who could have been ATG.

I believe in putting stricter standards for those given that ATG bowler title.
So Holding and Roberts are ATVGs?

Steyn cause of SL maybe. But his achievements in India are ATG stuff of the highest order, far better than Donald. Plus Steyn has a fifer in a win in Pak, and even in SA’s win in Sri Lanka, he was the best bowler

Steyn’s numbers fell because he faced SL at the fag end of his career. I think he had an average of around 23 before that series in SriLanka

This is Donald’s record. With the exception of his record against/in Australia, it is perfect yet he is ranked like 6-8 on this sub. I feel like Bumrah needs to have a better record in England as well so that his record can be statistically complete and can have no holes at all.

not all opponents are rated alike and record against Aus matters more than say record against Eng

Bumrah will have the same amount of tests after the series is done (if he plays all of them). Won’t get anywhere near Hadlee’s records tho.
Yeah, Hadlee and Ambrose are a level ahead in Aus. Those Bumrah can end up as one of the very best here also
