Is Tendulkar's career now "complete"?

I don't think Tendulkar intends to carry on playing ODIs. He might play an ODI here and there, but I definitely don't see him playing every ODI series. I think it's just a case of him not wanting to use the "R" word. For all intents and purposes he has retired from ODI cricket anyway. How many matches has he played over the last two years (excluding the World Cup)? Only four.
Are you sure????
yep, 2 ODIs against SA at home ( one of them was the one where he scored the 200* )and 2 away

Is it known whether this is because he made himself unavailable for selection or because the selectors chose not to pick him?

Quite sure. He played two ODIs against South Africa at home last year and two matches away from home earlier this year.
He has played a total of 28 matches and scored 1427 runs @ 57 and a s/r of 95 (5 hundreds). If you take out the WC, it's still 19 games. It's only in 2010 that he didn't play a lot. From April to Dec 2009, he played 15 matches. Maybe it was to rest for the WC or he might have lost the passion for ODIs (looks unlikely now). My guess is that he will miss the ODIs in the WI but play the ones in England and Australia.

I think it was a combination of both.

They wanted him rested for the very important test series and also for the WC coming up.

Yeah, it could have been a plan of the selectors but if you look at the ODIs in 2010, there weren't too many "big" series. There was the series against NZ and Zim/SRL where all the senior players were rested. Then there was another tri-series involving SL and Bang. The Aussie series was another one where the selectors rested several players (Tendulkar, Sehwag, Harby and Zaheer). The only reasonably big series that he missed was the Asia Cup.

I think that he'll want to play the series against England and Australia.

If you look at ODIs in the past 2 years, Tendulkar has played more than Zaheer and Sehwag has only played 2-3 games more. It's just that Tendulkar missing a series (or doing anything actually) attracts a lot more attention.

Other than in South Africa, where he got injured after the first two matches, it has been a regime of rest all to build up for the World Cup.

The whole team has been rotated and rested in a planned scheme to peak for the World Cup. Seems to have worked.

Kirsten and Dhoni ftw.

Just makes it worse, tbh. Even worse, he's apparently pretty bright.

A renaissance man. Dabbled in academia, makes his mark in sport and will likely go and do something else awesome when he finishes.

Disgusting.
Beautifully expressed post!

Hope he targets the 25 year mark in international cricket next. Then the 50, then the 100! Please die on a cricket field, never, EVER, retire.:p

So as not to derail the thread and knot Jono's panties (jk), I've replied to posters on their page if they wish to discuss things further.

Dhoni's career is probably more complete than him.

He Still has to win the IPL, chanpions league and the T20 WC ;)

It is after all a team game!

^^ good point

Tendulkar never dominated v Pakistan tbh, he should get his final century v Pak and then his career is complete.

Yeah, I was talking about matches since 2010. I do remember him playing the Champions Trophy et al in 2009. As for Zaheer and Sehwag - if I am not mistaken, they've missed plenty of matches due to injuries as well.

I guess we'll only know what he really has in mind after a tour or two. I am reasonably sure he'll look to prolong his test career now that he has got his hands on the World Cup trophy.

I actually remember reading it a week ago on the actual ESPN website. One of my American friends was/is trying to get into cricket and he linked me to it.. I was like "wtf how come I didn't know about this".. and now it's on cricinfo. Awesome article regardless.

All of these are a function of being good and longevity.
And his centuries in winning causes aren't that great.....
and tbf he wasn't that great against mcgrath and 2Ws( whom he didn't play too often)
100/inning

tendulkar 5.68
daylight 5.85
hayden 6.13
kallis 6.15
sangakarra 6.5
ponting 6.69
jayawardene 6.78
lara 6.8
sehwag 6.8

so tendulkar is head and shoulders above even the best modern batsman for 100/innings which is not a function of longevity but just a function of how good you are. In fact longevity just makes it harder.

also he holds a bunch of time-constrained records esp in ODI cricket like most runs in a year, in a WC, most tons in a WC, most tons in a year etc.

im sure there are more but just saying.

edit: also he debuted at 16 had he debuted at 19-20 like the rest of these guys, he'd be averaging 60, but we can play what if's all day.
edit2: and he'd be averaging 47 in ODI, hello mr. richards?
