Is Mushtaq Mohammad Underrated?

Fazal Mahmoud for Asif if 4 pacers picked
Head to head I wouldn't be against Mahmood, just think Asif as an excellent new ball bowler adds more in a 4 man pace attack. New ball bowling didn't come naturally to Wasim and Waqar. Asif covers that better than anyone else.

Underrated, but he's in my Pakistan ATG XI. Especially useful if going with 4 pacers. Imran, Wasim, Waqar and Asif.
Going with 4 pacers is unnecessary. Also, I’d take Shoaib/Fazal over Asif if forced to go with 4.

Shoaib and Waqar are similar. Don't need both in the same team. Fazal was a more workhorse type bowler. Don't need that in a side with 4 pace bowlers.

Asif was a beast IMO. He was far better than the likes of Amir, who everyone was fawning over at the time. All that controversy ruined what might have been a great career.
Asif was the best new ball bowler I have seen ever. Including McGrath.

But too short a career to put him in a first ATG XI.

Mushtaq would make ATG Pakistan XI if not for Imran.

Hanif Mohammed, Saeed Anwar, Younis Khan, Javed Miandad, Inzamam Ul Haq, Misbah ul Haq, Rizwan, Imran, Wasim, Saqlain, Waqar would be my ATG Pakistani XI.

One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong.

I love Misbah but Mushtaq was a similar quality batsman, and the fifth bowler in this side is literally Younis Khan.

When you have saqlain who can bowl marathon spells, there is not much issues.

Javed was a pretty handy legspinner ti start with

I think MoYo is clearly better than either as a batsman. Ideally you would like a 5th bowler, but it depends on how much you lose out in the batting.

Unsure of which way to go in this case.

Pakistan’s 4 man unit is probably what, 4th strongest in terms of ATG sides (Australia, Windies, South Africa all ahead) Their batting is at best I would say 6th, with or without the stronger batsman. (add England and India to the aforementioned teams)

I think having Mushtaq Mohammad at no 6 can be acceptable as you have deep batting with Imran at 8 and Wasim at 9.

I like the idea of a fourth seamer though but can't in my heart depart from Saqlain.

One can't walk into a series of any type with Younis or Miandad as a 5th bowler.

So even though MoYo is better and the batting unit would be the weakest of all of the 6 viable contenders, 4 bowlers either wear out your specialists, or you get wrecked bowling the at best part timer. Hell sometimes you may even need the part timer as a 6th.

You can accept the loss of a solid 5th bowler if all the top six bats are so good that you simply can't fit a batting AR.

In Pakistans case, I don't think Moyo or Misbah or Zaheer are going to make that much of a difference in an ATG setting, which justifies Mushtaq as a jack in the box capable of the odd worldclass AR performance against top opposition.
