Philander is an ATG in Swing Conditions ? but cannot call him a True All Time Great as he should have taken more Wickets and played longer. 72 Wickets outside South Africa at an Avg of 28.81 is not really impressive at the same time not too bad.
He wasn't picked early in his career to play longer. Still accomplished a helluva lot.

LOL @ you all for actually bothering to come up with fancy counter arguments to prove Philander is not better than Wasim, Lillee, etc. It's a random outlier opinion that doesn't need much rebuttal.

Stats clearly show that Philander was the most lethal bowler after Dale Steyn in Swinging Conditions for the previous decade(2010s), So i have to partially agree that he is an All Time Great as he was also good at Batting in the Lower Order. The only problem with Philander was Longevity.

We tend to Overate Batsmen and Underate Bowlers in Cricket.

Here's who I've got as unquestioned top 8 ATGs in my mind, from this era. Above AdV I've still got to put a bunch of Australians, Dravid, and some active players as well, just off the top of my mind.

How are you an "ATG", if there are multiple tiers ahead of you? What does ATG even mean then anymore?

Top 5-10 bats during his time, sure. But let's not water down what we mean by ATG.
**** it, you guys are right, and have actually convinced me. I'd put in Garner over Philander, given the arguments mentioned. Thought of some other bowlers as well like Imran and Pollock are probably better than him too (Still think he's better than Lillee, so put that in your pipes and smoke it Church of Orthodox Concensus CW Cricket Opinions!) My revised list of ATG seamers from modern (70-) era:

Richard Hadlee
Joel Garner
Malcolm Marshall
Curtly Ambrose
Allan Donald
Glenn Mcgrath
Dale Steyn

The whole point of this freaking tangent is that ATG is an exclusive as **** category, and a club in which AdV doesn't belong.

Vernon Philander has the Best Average Among all South African Greats when you include only England, New Zealand and South African Swinging Conditions.

1) Allan Donald - 232 Wickets at an Avg of 22.15
2) Shaun Pollock - 296 Wickets at an Avg of 21.74
3) Dale Steyn - 293 Wickets at an Avg of 22.55
4) Vernon Philander - 191 Wickets at an Avg of 20.06*

In an All Time XI i would choose Vernon Philander if the Games are played in South Africa, England and New Zealand as he is also a good lower order batsmen.

Haha not exactly an apples to apples comparison there.
I compared them as Jeff Thompson and Vernon Philander were Lethal when conditions suited them. I agree that both are different bowlers one is a Super Fast bowler and another a medium paced Swing bowler.

South African Media is not very influential like England and Australia so Philander is a bit under-rated if he was playing for Australia or England they would celebrate him as an Ashes Hero if he wins a couple of matches in Ashes series.

Gary Kirsten had a very decent record in most of the Test playing Nations but he is Under-rated. However, the fact is he along with Graeme Smith had the best overseas record among all Great Openers from past 30 years.

I meant that the conditions weren't exactly apples to apples. I don't mind comparing two different types of players with the same criteria but the criteria has to be the same. I'm not sure you can say the conditions in Australia suited JT as much as the conditions in SA suited Philander.
