International Cricket Captain: Forumer's Challenge

weeman27bob

International Vice-Captain
This year:

5 Tests, 548 runs at 68.5.

7 ODIs, 406 runs at 67.7. Strike rate of 76.

And I probably should have said, you became the no.1 ODI batsman in the world. Congrats.

Riley, incidentally, is averaging over a hundred in ODIs this year at a strike rate of 90. Thanks to only 2 dismissals in 7 matches, Mussey-style.
Might that be because I am in fact Mussey?

I've had to put this on the back burner for a while now, sorry about that. I'll be able to do another match or two tonight.

1st ODI vs South Africa

CW won the toss and elected to bowl first on a lively surface. Phlegm missed out through injury, and was replaced with Noble.

Playing XI: Heads, Dharan, Ballich, Spark, Riley, Ikram, Winne, Hing, Capone, Noble, Dong

Things did not go well for the home side as Smith and Puttick built their partnership throughout each bowler's opening spell, as seemingly none of the CWers could use the conditions to effect.

VVS Noble finally got the breakthrough, but it came with the score on 147 in the 30th over. Puttick edged to slip for 51 off 88, but Smith had been the aggressor and was still there on 89 from 92 balls.

Capone was eventually the man to find Smith's edge, and got Rudolph lbw in the same over as the CWers fought back, Hing getting Gibbs with a simple caught and bowled.

Kallis and McKenzie countered, however, and the pair put on 64 in just 8 overs. Hing eventually had Kallis caught at slip (for 44 off 36) in his final over, but by then the damage was done, South Africa having reached 251 for 5, with 6 overs remaining.

Capone bowled a brilliant maiden to McKenzie for the 45th, and in the 47th trapped his man lbw, McKenzie having scored 42 off 33. Boucher became the left-armer's 4th wicket with the 6th ball of that over - Capone was almost single-handeldly keeping CW in the game.

Dong bowled Pollock for 2, and with the first ball of his last over Capone had Terbrugge lbw to complete his five-for. He then took an excellent catch to dismiss Townsend - off Dong's final over - to end the innings. South Africa had collapsed to 263 all out.

Heads played as aggressively as he could, hitting Terbrugge for three fours in succession before getting bowled going for a fourth. Dharan struggled to keep up with the rate, and departed for 18 off 42 balls. Spark followed him next ball, and CW were up against it at 63/3 in the 16th.

Riley and Ballich attempted a recovery, but neither was able to go on as the true nature of the pitch made scoring difficult. Kallis took three, and Terbrugge two more, as the CWers collapsed. Winne provided some resistance, but as wickets fell - including Capone's to an absurd run out - his 27 off 20 served to do little more than entertain the crowd.

The home side were eventually all out for 163 in the 40th over, when Dong was bowled by Hall.

South Africa won by 100 runs

2nd ODI vs South Africa

CW made three changes, chiefly to their bowling. Noble and Dong were changed for Corrin and Phlegm; while Ikram was replaced by Clark. South Africa won the toss and batted.

Smith became an early casualty this time when he edged an airy drive off Phlegm to slip, having made 12. Phlegm struck again in his fifth over to remove Kallis, and South Africa had made a shaky start at 36/2 in the 10th.

Capone bowled a maiden over before the CWers turned to their spinners. Rudolph found himself tied down and after a succession of lbw appeals, he was bowled by Corrin for 17 off 43. A sweep by Puttick in the next over went badly wrong and he was caught behind for 38 off 63. Corrin was not done, picking up the wickets of Gibbs and McKenzie in his exceelent spell of 10-1-36-3. When he came off, South Africa were struggling at 112/6 in the 32nd.

Boucher led something of a recovery, but CW, and especially Hing, continued to keep a lid on the scoring. The keeper passed 50 in good time but Pollock was out off Winne for a frustrated 8 off 26 balls, before Capone bowled Hall. Boucher was starved of the strike, and Capone and Phlegm's death bowling led to only 13 runs being scored in the final seven overs. Boucher finished on 60* from 83 balls and his team on 179/9.

Heads made a positive start at the beginning of the CWers' reply, but was out for 17 when he edged Terbrugge to slip. All questions of South Africa getting back into it, however, were quashed by the second wicket stand. Dharan was joined by Ballich, and the pair put on a steady partnership of 95 to keep CW firmly in control. Both men raised cautious fifties, Ballich's off 80 balls and Dharan's off 91.

Dharan was out to Hall in the 35th over, but Ballich stayed to the end with 69*. Following a run-a-ball 31 from Spark, who departed with only three runs required, Ballich hit the winning runs to level the series for CW.

CW won by 7 wickets

Cheers mate. That's interesting, can you link me?
He's referring to one I've started over at Cricsim, though it's pretty different in the sense that forumers pick a certain player from a pre-determined (Sussex) squad, and I rename them, since I have no idea how to use the ICC editor for the only version I have (ICC 08). I copied it from something Marcuss did. It isn't a proper one like this by all means, just for a bit of a laugh and to get rid of boredom - CricSim

EDIT: Just realised you can't view it, it's in the Asian subbie :p

3rd ODI vs South Africa

Narang was brought in for Clark as South Africa put the CWers in to bat.

Progress was initially slow, and things got worse for the home side as Pollock made inroads into the top order. Dharan departed for 2 off 11 and Heads for 14 off 28.

A succession of 20s and 30s followed from the middle order, coming at various speeds but without anyone able to make use of their start. Winne aimed to up the scoring but failed to time anything, struggling to 3 off 20 balls before playing around a straight delivery from Terbrugge.

From 146/8 Corrin and Capone provided some resistance, but in the end the CWers struggled to 186 all out, unquestionably their top seven to blame.

A likely defeat soon turned into a clear thrashing when Smith and Puttick put on their second hundred partnership of the series. Smith raised his 50 from 70 balls and Puttick did so from 82, the pair content to calmly work towards the total - until Smith decided to go after Hing, leaving the left-arm spinner's figures a wreck.

Capone got the breakthrough when he induced a mis-hit from Puttick, the score on 144 in the 31st. Smith reached his century soon after, and the remaining runs were knocked off with 28 balls to spare.

South Africa won by 9 wickets

4th ODI vs South Africa

Clark replaced Winne and Dean replaced Hing as CW chose to bowl first.

Smith started aggressively as ever, and took 13 from Clark's first over, but the breakthrough came soon after as Puttick was run out. Clark continued to leak runs - conceding 29 from his first three overs - and South Africa built a solid platform, Smith and Kallis taking the score to 80/1 in the 16th.

Capone got rid of Kallis (28 off 36) and Dean bowled Smith in the next over for a run a ball 47 to keep it a close contest. Corrin had a huge shout for lbw turned down against Rudolph, and in his second the same batsman survived a questionable decision for caught behind. The spinners kept a check on the scoring, but Corrin had to wait until the 32nd over to get his man, Rudolph departing for 24 off 59 and caught at square leg. The score was 138/4.

Narang bowled his first two overs for as many runs, and in the third had Rowley dismissed. When Dean bowled Boucher the following over, the CWers had begun to get ahead of the game. However, Gibbs and Pollock suddenly accelerated, and were able to 61 in 7 overs before Capone bowled Pollock for 25 off 21. The charge had taken South Africa well past 200.

Hall was heavily restricted at the death to 4 off 13, before both him and Hall were dismissed by Phlegm in the final over. Gibbs however made it to the end, and his 91* from just 80 balls had been crucial to the total of 247/9.

Narang was asked to return to opening, but only managed 10 off 20 before being bowled by Terbrugge. Ballich's painstaking 19 from 47 deliveries did little to ease the needed run rate, but fortunately for the CWers Heads was having one of his good days, the left - hander already reaching 60 from 58 balls by the time Ballich was dismissed. After 20 overs the score was 97/2.

Heads was seemingly going to fight a lone hand. Spark, Riley and Dharan departed for single figures, and Clark on a miserable 6 from 33 balls, when Heads brought up his century from 89 deliveries. The CWers needed 93 from the final 13 overs, with five wickets in hand.

The five wickets did not last long. With Terbrugge and Townsend sharing the wickets, Clark went for 7 off 35 and Heads was finally dismissed soon after. Corrin, Capone and Dean only found the spirit to just reach double figures, and CW slid to a series defeat.

South Africa won by 54 runs

MotM - John Heads
