3rd Test vs South Africa
CW brought back Ballich for REMOVED and batted first.
After a cautious start, the CW openers made healthy progress in the morning and reached lunch without loss on 82. The partnership had reached 95, and Narang 47, when the right-hander was run out - Heads the man at fault for calling him through after hitting it straight to midwicket. Amazingly, Ballich suffered exactly the same fate, by the exact same fielder.
CW were stumbling when Spark was out lbw to Hall, but Heads raised his 50 and saw off the remainder of the session with Riley, 175/3 the score at tea. The pair had put on 106, and Heads raised his ton, when Hall got the wicket of Heads. Riley edged Kallis to Puttick soon after, but Dharan and Winne made it to the close. CW had just about had the better of the first day on 267/5.
The second day beloged to Dharan, who appeared to be back to his very best. He brought up his 100 off 160 balls just after lunch and ended the day on a brilliant 176*. Having added 82 with Winne (46), and 51 with Corrin (20), Capone joined him at the crease and chanced his arm - the left hander slogging 76 from 102 balls in a stand of 180. By stumps, CW had smashed their way to 585/8.
Dharan only needed half an hour on day three to bring up his double ton, and CW declared on 631/9 with the wicketkeeper-batsman on 202*.
The rest of the session brought only one wicket, Capone getting Gibbs but Kallis and Smith providing resistance. After lunch, Smith fell to a beaut from Capone, seaming away and finding the outside edge. Kallis was gone two balls later, edging Capone behind, and Winne dismissed Rudolph. South Africa were in serious trouble at 97/4.
Rowley and Puttick managed a recovery as the pair looked to counter attack, putting on 98 more in the afternoon session. Rowley brought up his 50 in quick time, but was bowled by Corrin just before tea for 56. Dean ended Boucher's stay in the next over, South Africa 200/6.
After tea Pollock and Puttick were able to recover, but at this stage it was largely only an attempt to avoid the follow-on. The pair added 93, but Puttick edged Phlegm to slip as soon as the second new ball was taken, gone for 82. Pollock also reached 50 but became Phlegm's second scalp in the final few overs of the day. Stumps were called on 314/8.
Phlegm quickly finished off the tail on day four and South Africa were asked to follow on, 312 behind. Phlegm was still on a roll and dismissed both openers in his opening spell of 2-24. Winne dismissed Rudolph once again and South Africa reached lunch on 80/3, largely thanks to Kallis' 40*.
Kallis reached 50 but Puttick was unable to continue his run, bowled by Dean for 10. Dean picked up another when Rowley edged him behind. Boucher and Kallis played the spinners more carefully, but Phlegm returned for a second spell and fetched out Boucher for 31. It seemed only a matter of time now, with the visitors 177/6 at tea.
Kallis raised his hundred in the evening session, and was 148* when stumps were called. After having put on over a hundred with Pollock (44), Corrin had got Pollock out lbw in the final few minutes of the day.
The resistance was ended within an hour on day 5. Capone had Hall nick one behind for 16, and Winne did the same for Nel. Kallis was the last man out for 180, lbw to Winne. Fighting a lone hand, Kallis had only done just enough to make CW bat again, and the openers knocked of the 16 runs with ease.
CW won by 10 wickets and won the series 2-1
