Uttar Pradesh have been bowled out (luckily, read on) for 342 and now have Bengal at 54/5, with Pravin Kumar opening the bowling and taking all five wickets. They can now force a result here if they keep up this performance till the final over. That's one step closer to a national call-up.Chawla may be a talking point among fans, but he's a leg-spinner and the spin hierarchy here in India is difficult to cross. He may have played in the Challenger series. He may have been called up to practice with the national team. But his India debut will happen a lot later, unless the selectors take a major risk and rush him in. The Indian team is desperately missing a seam-bowling all-rounder, and Pravin Kumar has done wonders for his team, so he may have a better chance of making the side. After all, he doesn't have to fill the shoes of any great player, but walk in his own shoes in the team. If UP win the tournament, it will be on Pravin's performances all along.
The seam bowling allrounders we have:
Sanjay Bangar
JP Yadav
P Kumar
Munaf Patel

Spin Bowling allrounders:
R Powar
V Sivaramakrishnan
P Chawla

Having 1 from each group in the ODI team of 15 will make better sense than to have
5 seamers for a sub-continent tournament or single dimensional players like Harbajan Singh.

I think Piyush Chawla and Munaf Patel should be brought into the one-day side if they do well in the Ranji One-Day Tourney. Ramesh Powar is long overdue as well, but the selectors don't seem to be too fond of him for some reason.

Looking at the Ranji heroes, Ramesh Powar is the leading wicket-taker this season, with 42 in 7 matches. He's followed by Uttar Pradesh seamer and surprise package Pravin Kumar, with 41 in 8, while the supposedly fast Munaf Patel has 34 in 7 matches. Haryana's swing bowler and middle-order batsman Joginder Sharma also took 34 wickets but in a match less. Young legspinner and future India prospect Piyush Chawla got 35 wickets in 7 matches, also playing his first season, along with Pravin. Most of these bowlers have also among their teams' top run-scorers. Siddharth Trivedi, medium-pacer SS Paul and offie Sourashish Lahiri also make up the top ten wicket takers.

Among the top run-scorers, Amol Mazumdar leads the pack. He's been among the top run-scorers in India, but has never got a national call-up, even as some bizarre selections are made to get a few other batsmen nowhere as consistent and lacking in value addition. Not surprisingly, there are a few averages over 60, and one over 100 (Wasim Jaffer played four matches and then got a national call-up), but most importantly, Raina and Jadhav have been among the top 10 run-scorers. At 11, you have Sachin Rana, who has also taken 23 wickets in 6 matches.

Even as attention (surprisingly) is focussed on Mazumdar, Jaffer, Kaif, Raina, Paul and Powar, a newcomer playing his first FC season made rapid strides, helping his team win the tournament (they did come close, though) on the back of his performances. Uttar Pradesh seamer Pravin Kumar opened the bowling on most occasions, and finished the series with 41 wickets at an average of 23, taking 5 in an innings four times an 10 in a match once. His batting has been a major factor as well, as he averaged a little under 30 with three scores over 50. He's a hard hitter and looks to take a lot of risks, even when he opens the innings. A tall, muscular seamer, he can get good bounce and he moves the ball a little off the pitch, but his pace is not known. Still, he's done his chances for a national call-up no harm at all, and may soon be seen among his fellow UP teammates in the Indian team.

Some fantastic news for fans of Indian domestic cricket– Nimbus has acquired the rights to telecast all international and domestic cricket in India for the next 4 years (till 2010)– and hopefully longer. Here are some highlights
  • High-Definition TV broadcast for the first time ever
  • 18 cameras for domestic matches
  • Use of Hawkeye, snicko and other tech toys

Today's Times Of India (Mumbai Edition) has one full page (more or less) covering the ongoing Ranji One-Day series. Grab it.

Too bad I'm an Indian domestic cricket fan in America. I'll have to resort to you guys' analysis, the statistics and my own made-up judgments.

It is good if the Indian Domestic matches are being telecast live. The some domestic matches which should be telecast live -

Challenger Trophy
Irani Trophy
Ranji Trophy Semi-finals and Final
Duleep Trophy
Deodhar Trophy OD Tournament
Ranji Trophy OD Tournament Semi-finals and Final.

The Ranji Trophy OD Tournament and Deodhar Trophy OD Tournament, should be played in coloured clothing with white balls instead of white-clothing and red balls. If possible, the Deodhar Trophy, should have some of its matches as Day/Night matches.

Agree and I think some domestic game should be televised all the time. DD sports has nothing else to telecast, so if there are like 7 Ranji games going on at the same time, they can pick on which will be the best game and then they should cover it LIVE.

Oh brother, DD Sport? That's enough to turn away a lot of fans! Anyway, if they can improve the quality of coverage, it's not too bad. Anyway, TEN and ZEE don't have much to cover, so they could do this just as well.

The coverage is going to be done by Nimbus, remember? Their coverage will be of very good quality, I am sure. Whichever channel gets the rights is simply gonna be a carrier of the feed, nothing else.

Nimbus should launch their own sports channel, maybe even 2 to cover 2 domestic matches at a time.

Our friends in Delhi may have something to say about the youngsters playing for the Delhi team. There's one giant (6'4") seamer named Ishant Sharma, who bowled well in a match against J&K, getting four top-order wickets with good bounce and a little seam movement. There is an offie, Suhail Sharma, who picked up three, and is also a good batsman. Hindustan Times is very impressed with the Delhi selection, saying they've been done on merit, and they've even gone in for a few all-rounders as well. Luckily Manoj Prabhakar didn't return...

Delhi have gone back to politics. Suhail Sharma, didnt play at all against Punjab and Ishant Sharma, was the only player who performed for Delhi in that match. DDCA is totally politics dominated and unless you dont have money, you cant stay in the team irrespective of performance. The politics is so high that even I can become a List A cricketer in Delhi provided I can spend some Rs.10-15 Lakhs.

I cant understand why the Ranji Trophy ODs are being played with a red ball and white clothing. The same players, have struggled in International matches when they have to play with the white ball and coloured clothing. Also, most of them seem to struggle in Challenger Trophy as well in the white ball and coloured clothing. The BCCI, should step in and start Ranji Trophy ODs in coloured clothing with white balls being used.

The Ranji Trophy ODs format should be changed like the Ranji Trophy 4-dayers with teams being divided into Plate group and Elite group with promotion and relegation taking place between the teams.

Using a white ball would definitely be a good idea. As for the colored clothing, I really hope our players don't need colorful jerseys in order to play good one-day cricket, because that's pretty pathetic. I play 25-over cricket in whites.

White ball and white clothing just wont match. With white balls being used, the coloured clothing will also have to be used.
