Indian domestic season 2005-06

Besides the sensational India-Pakistan match, there is something more going on as well. The UP v Bengal Ranji final, just started today with UP starting off well getting to 61/0 in 18 overs with their find of the season, Pravin Kumar blasting himself to 44 off 53 balls. If he does well in this match too with the ball, then he should be given a go in the India "A" team. He has a strong built and can play the big shots with ease. Also, till now nothing about his bowling speed is known.

The India-Pakistan match isnt the only match in progress today of interest to Indian fans, but we also have the Ranji Trophy finals in progress and UP are on a strong position and look to be the favourites to lift the Ranji Trophy. UP, are going well on 281/3 off 81 overs with Shukla making 71 and Kaif, scoring 92 runs. These 2, put together a 123 run partnership after a 55-ball 48 cameo by Pravin Kumar, UPs find of the season. Suresh Raina, is batting on 54* and there is still some bit of batting left for UP.

UP, chose to play out the remainding of the day and did not went in for big shots as they finish day 1 on 299/3. Suresh Raina, will be looking for a big innings now and UP, will be looking to take this score well past 500 and will try to bat Bengal out of this match now.

Surprisingly we all missed this howler. The Delhi selectors are so desperate, they've recalled Manoj Prabhakar to play the Ranji OD's this season. They believe his experience can be a factor for them. Comments?

If this news is true:wacko:, then we will see Walsh and Ambrose return into the West Indies team soon and dont be surprised to see Kapil Dev return into the Indian team and Saeed Anwar and Wasim Akram back into the Pakistani team. And yes, we might see the Waughs return back for Australia and Allan Donald back into the South African team.

Delhi sure have more than a few problems at hand.....

One man to watch is Sachin Rana. he's been scoring heavily for Haryana, and he's done well as a support seam bowler for his team, opening the bowling. Wonder how he'll do in the forthcoming ROD series. Who knows, he could be the Indian answer to Shahid Afridi or Justin Kemp– not that Munaf Patel and Yusuf Pathan shouldn't make it, but he's performed better with the bat than both (especially Munaf), and he's had a better bowling record than Yusuf. Moreover, he's had a few big-hitting innings this season. That said, it shouldn't be over for Joginder Sharma.

Whatever it takes!!!
OMG @ Prabhakar coming back. Apparently, he was never involved with the bookies during his playing days. The guy who did the enquiry said that he was involved with bookies around 97/98 and it was the same time as the Tehelka scandal. Manoj says that he was getting friendly with those guys for the "expose" and I haven't seen anything in his indictment that suggests otherwise.

But THAT match against the Windies still puzzles me, when him and Mongia batted so slowly when India needed more than 8 RPO to win the match. It's his only ODI century, I think.

In that case, I'd like to get the chance of watching Bradman, Sobers and Richards as well. Never had that opportunity.

It is a battle for first inning lead which may be important if the game doesn't provide a result. Laxmi Ratan Shukla at 49* is soldiering on but just two wickets remain and 40 runs are to still needed.

On a different note, what happens if the scores are tied at the end of a first inning and the match ends in a draw?

Surprising to see Shukla at nine, since he's a specialist batsman. Why doesn't he bowl seam-up these days? Shouldn't be too hard, and it would add some much-needed balance to the team, and it's a lot better than having Ganguly's (when he plays) no-ball-ridden little medium-pace and Rohan Gavaskar's excuse for left-arm spin. He's done rather well for Bengla in the past as a support bowler, and since Bengal's strike pacers are better now, he'd make a good support. That said, the absence of Sanjib Sanyal is strange.

With the 1st innings lead rule being in place, it is very important for both the teams to try and go for the 1st innings lead now. It is getting very interesting on that front now as Bengal, are now 38 runs behind and still have 2 wickets in hand with LR Shukla being well set and having got a half century. Incase, you dont know, LR Shukla, is still one of the all-round prospects we have in India and he has a bit of international experience having played in a few ODIs before around 1998, when he was just 17/18.

At the end of Day Four, UP are at 183 for 2, with Kaif unbeaten on 81. UP have already got a lead of 14 runs and may look to consolidate on it, and Kaif may play for a big score to please those dissatisfied selectors, but ideally, he should play for a win and declare when the fourth-innings target is well beyond the reach of Bengal. Shivkant Shukla also got a 50, but Pravin Kumar's daredevilry didn't work this time, as he was out for 15 in 16 balls. Legspinner Piyush Chawla got 5 wickets and a national call-up isn't far away, but the shoes of Anil Kumble are big ones to fill. Pravin Kumar, though, won't be filling anyone's shoes if he makes his debut for India, and that will be a big positive.

Calm down. I don't think anyone will get considered for a call-up until he's performed in the Challenger Series in front of Chappell and co. Especially Pravin Kumar, no one even knows who the hell he is, besides people like you and I who follow domestic cricket.

NOT AGAIN!!! Uttar Pradesh are only tryign to hold a first innings lead on the final day. They have a led of 356, and 42 overs are left, so they should declare at this stage and go all out to roll over Bengal before close of play. Kaif got a century, while Raina got one more in this match over 50.

Well, so much is being spoken about Piyush Chawla, that he's the next Anil Kumble, and a genuine India contender, but replacing Anil Kumble is a tough ask. After Kumble, there's Harbhajan, then Karthik or Powar, and that's a tough road ahead. But who's been India's premier medium-pace all-rounder? We don't know if there is one, so it's not so tough for Pravin. He's been a surprise package in this tournament, so it won't be long before he'll be a talking point among fans.

That's fine. Let's wait until he becomes a talking point before talking about his future playing for India. Chawla has impressed at the under-19 level, done well in the Challenger Series and been called up to practice with the national team already. There's a huge difference.

Uttar Pradesh have been bowled out (luckily, read on) for 342 and now have Bengal at 54/5, with Pravin Kumar opening the bowling and taking all five wickets. They can now force a result here if they keep up this performance till the final over. That's one step closer to a national call-up.

Chawla may be a talking point among fans, but he's a leg-spinner and the spin hierarchy here in India is difficult to cross. He may have played in the Challenger series. He may have been called up to practice with the national team. But his India debut will happen a lot later, unless the selectors take a major risk and rush him in. The Indian team is desperately missing a seam-bowling all-rounder, and Pravin Kumar has done wonders for his team, so he may have a better chance of making the side. After all, he doesn't have to fill the shoes of any great player, but walk in his own shoes in the team. If UP win the tournament, it will be on Pravin's performances all along.

Pravin Kumar, with his bowling figures looks like a bowler who seems to have one of these -

1. Either he can swing the ball
2. Either he has a extra pace

But still not too much about his bowling style is known as noone out here has seen him in action. It wont be too long before he is seen in action and he must be picked this year in the challenger trophy and be among the list of 30+ probables for the 2007 world cup.

Pravin Kumar, is a explosive batsman while batting and can score the runs in big shots, plus he also takes wickets. With UP having only 33 or so overs to bowl Bengal out, he opened the bowling and took all 5 wickets within just 12 overs! And, this gave some chance to UP to get their 1st Ranji trophy win. There might be talk of how Kaif and Raina, took UP to their 1st Ranji title with Kaif making a 92 and a century and Raina getting a 90 and a half-century, but then UPs find of the season, Pravin Kumar did well starting it explosively for UP getting a 48 in the 1st innings and taking 8 wickets in the match.

Here are his statistics of this years Ranji Trophy from Cricketarchive -

These stats are great stats for someone playing his only 1st Ranji Trophy season as a 19 year old. The way he has started, we might see him making his India debut later this year.
