Indian Cricket League thread

Already a few matches old and this thread ends up in the fifth page...tells you a little about the impact of ICL on this community, doesn't it?

It's interesting that it hasn't got people commenting on the players scores at least.

Mind you... I wonder at the depth of quality in the teams when I see that Ian Harvey is opening the batting and the bowling for Chennai.

This tournament is getting to be a joke. One match from the IPL will blow away the ICL and claims that an Indian ICL player will play for India.

Am I the only one who finds it aggravating that the umpires refer easy to judge LBW decisions to the third umpire? Oh, and the commentators, they suck eggs.

Looking at countless dropped catches, misfields, missed throws and non-collections, I wonder what good fielding they're talking about. In fact, you can put together six teams of Indian internationals and local players, and you'd get better fielding teams than what we're seeing here.

A couple of teams have really good fielding, the rest are dire, yeah.
In just twelve minutes, we saw three howlers by the Jets, including from Atapattu.

Frankly, none of the performances suggest that the retirees be called back from retirement or the rejects and rebels get national or state recalls.

If only the Indian domestic scene had such a setup, they'd do a lot better.

Remember that the ICL is in its first year and although the BCCI are dire, you cannot hope to overthrow them in the first year.

However, based on how players in Indian domestic cricket are treated (having to have jobs outside cricket for one), I feel that we will be seeing many more signings to the ICL soon and maybe, combined with the overseas talent, the ICL may be able to provide a higher standard of competition than the BCCIs one day tournaments, when the ICL get to 50 over tournaments in three years if their model goes to plan.

My blog entry about the ICL touches on many of these issues and makes a discovery that two out of Praveen Kumar, Joginder Sharma and Yusuf Pathan were considering joining the ICL as recently as September! Considering that these three are the cream of domestic performers outside the 20 or so who are in the setup so to speak, it seems that even the best outside the squad can be lured.

It is perfectly possible that the ICL will have half (maybe more) of the talent who compete at top level Indian domestic cricket in five years and with better utilisation, we may be seeing a better standard of competition than in non overseas based (ie. non IPL-esque), BCCI tournaments.

ICL is back! They've started their 50-over tournament at Mayajaal, near Chennai. Already four matches have been played, and this time, the international players have been replaced by unknown newcomers.

Justin Kemp has now signed on. Kempie will be making over $300,000 a season for some team.

A new side has entered ICL, the 'Lahore Badshahs'...

http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2008/feb/29icl.htm

" The Pakistan players include former captain Inzamam-ul Haq, Abdul Razzaq, Imran Farhat, Taufiq Umar, Azhar Mahmood, Shabbir Ahmed, Rana Naved, Mohammad Sami, Hasan Rana, Naved Latif, Shahid Nazir, Mushtaq Ahmed, Humayun Farhat, Imran Nazir and Arshad Khan."

Moin Khan, the ICL representative in Pakistan, said there are plans to have designated city teams from Colombo and Dhaka in the tournament as well."

hmm, good signing
Yeah, good deal for Kempie although, considering what is happening with Shane Bond and the Pakistani cricketers, his deal with Kent must now be in doubt. Same goes for the likes of Hall, van der Wath, Boje and Zulu, all cricketers who are planning to combine both ICL and county cricket.

Wouldn't there be a different rule for Koplax players and overseas players. I would have thought the home boards have no control on whether to spot a Kolpax or EU player, getting a game in county cricket.

Looks a good tourney, i will be checking the progress of the teams as i have good feeling that this will be long term better then IPL, they seem tto look after the younger players better

It actually looks a suprisingly good comp, though obviously I dont know the Indian players.

Certainly looks less deserving of the mockery it often faces than I thought.
