I actually think that in India he'll be fine opening. Still think Gill would be better though.
Rohit will get runs for sure but that's why it'll hurt because they'll take him overseas. And this when we have several promising young openers. It's short sighted as ****.

If India don't open with Gill they've got rocks in their head. Him and Shaw look potential ATG's to me. Burning Nohit as an opener in comparison is silly.
Shaw, in particular, could be ripe for a Vinod Kambli-esque career. Let's hope for more, though, yes.

Rohit in India is definitely up there as a batsman and I don't mind him as a Vihari/Nair backup even overseas.

But he's 32, doesn't open in FC/Tests and we need one that can perform overseas. If he opens it'll be the worst selection we've made for a while now.

Not sure Rohit is such a lock to get runs while opening, even in India.

It's a completely different ballgame to white ball cricket as the likes of Finch and Roy have proven. Middle order, he may downhill ski a few runs against weaker opposition.

Think Rohit >> Finch/Roy though and even Finch got runs opening in the UAE, just got exposed hard at home.

Recently learned that Gill is an opener. How come he doesn't stroll into that opening spot?
He should, but this team management and certain former players/members of the media have a seeming obsession with somehow squeezing Rohit into the Test team. The second any of our bats get into a rut, the murmurs of "Rohit Rohit Rohit" begin in the media, with new and increasingly questionable reasoning for his inclusion each time (TALENT; INTENT; uh...rahul sucks??) before turning into a loud chorus that makes his return seem inevitable. To their (very minimal) credit, Kohli/Shastri usually take a test or two to realize that it's a stupid idea and drop him, but they inexplicably keep going back to it. He must be great in the dressing room.

I can see him doing okay on Asian surfaces (although Rabada is probably hard rn at the prospect of bowling to him with a new ball), but the second conditions go even slightly in favour of a decent pace attack, and there are a few of those around right now, I see him Jason Roy'ing it up (but with more style points) in a hurry. This is a batsman who responded to Dale Steyn sledging him in Durban with "come to india buddy, let's see what you do there", possibly the weakest, most pathetic comeback to a sledge I've ever heard from an international cricketer (this while he was still at the crease with an opportunity to save the test for us).

Just on principle alone, he shouldn't have played test cricket for India again.

Long term Gill is India's number 3/4

If Prithvi Shaw was available all this Rohit stuff would be non existent I reckon.

Was thinking about it the other day. India had it good with Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Pujara and Rahane over both formats and all 30+ now

That next generation is rather quiet or hasn't really had the chance to do anything ie Iyer , Samson in the 25-30 range and we all know the future is Shaw, Gill and Pant.

Question: You have opened in Tests yourself. What does Rohit need do to succeed?

Sanjay Bangar: The key to his success will be if he maintains his individual style of play. He has to maintain his individuality.

This is what the batting coach thinks. Sick of this "express yourself with intent" mentality. Grown ass adults playing Test cricket ought to be expected to change their ****ing games according to format and situation. Oh look there's a juicy looking ball outside off I usually dispatch to the deep cover fence in ODIs. What could possibly go wrong if I try the same in a Test?

Theres a baffling sentiment among the majority of the casual Indian fanbase/media that Rohit has been hard done by when it comes to his test career. And obviously it's absolute nonsense. I actually think there's a decent chance he'll do well, but he is bloody lucky to still be given another opportunity in a role where India have several promising young players.

There's been a "let's find some way to fit Rohit into the team at any cost" mentality over the years. He was tried at six to fix India's long running problem to fill that hole. Didnt work. Pujara was dropped from a tour to SL (!) to try Rohit out at 3. It didnt work, and instead of Rohit being dropped, Pujara was made to open and Rohit was pushed back down the order to 5. Then again, he was tried out at 3 on a tour to Aus. Then he was given a few tests back down the order. Now when it looks like the door has closed for him at 6 with Vihari having a good series, suddenly he's an opener? wut. Very strange stuff. All this shuffling around simply to try and find a spot for him.

It's Yuvraj all over again, brilliant ODI player and looks like he should do well in Tests but not quite solid enough technically. At least Yuvraj gave us some memorable moments like Chennai 2008, and a few good centuries against Pakistan.

Rohit's just generally downhill-skiied or bullied weak opposition.

Does he even want a test career? Has anyone asked him?
He is 33 and he should be told to focus on the shorter formats where he makes a genuine difference. India have numerous world cups coming up over next few years where he could play a key role,,that should be his main focus not trying to figure out a format he has always struggled with.

Rohit could win India a world cup, he certainly won't win you a tough test series unless you consider Sri Lanka at home difficult.

While I share the anger about rohiselectional favouritism, I am more slightly more optimistic about him succeeding in tests.

Thank god Hansie flew a plane into a mountain, because I bet we'd be experiencing the same **** with him if he was still alive.
