hi y'all - i'm back again!!!
I see we still have some elements of the terrace crowd still contributing their own version of the truth behind Darwin's Theory of Evolution, so i thought i'd spice things up for them!!!
my views on the tourney so far....
Game 1
Pakistan
! - continue their recent crap form. I know I picked them to do well but that was b4 the debacle in Kenya. They would appear to have some major problems (and not just poor player form), which if they do not get sorted soon they can forget about the WC. I see Wasim has announced his intention to retire after the WC & Saeed Anwar is also talking of going - could be they have other things on their minds than what is going on out in the middle.
Sri Lanka :I - hard to judge anything considering the lack of performance from the opposition, but good to see Aravinda & Jayasuriya together again wrecking their own brand of havoc. They will be sorely missed when they eventually retire.
Game 2
S Africa :P - the game they should have won easily - they should never have allowed it to get as close as it did & should have cruised to victory. They need to improve their batting at the top if they want to win in the semi.
W Indies :O - allowed to flatter to deceive by inept S African batting at the top of the innings. Both teams showed the danger of slow run rates near the top of an innings (Chanderpaul & Dippenaar)& the resulting pressure placed at the end of the innings.
Game 3
India  - the greatest escape so far - the terrace crowd can crow all they like anout this "victory" - it was still a crap performance saved by a couple of batsmen. The excuse the team are rusty is just shite as India, England, Australia, Pakistan & Kenya have all just come off International Series whereas the rest of the teams have been out of action for some time. The Indian bowlers showed nothing to worry the better batting sides as the nearly contrived to fail to defend 288!!!
Zimbabwe
- brilliant performance in extreme adversity in falling just over a dozen runs short - hats off to Flower for a great knock - Kaif was good but Flower was streets better. Flower had a nightmare behind the sticks - 2 missed stumpings & at least 1 run out let go, and Streak defended after Hondo finished his first spell when he should have attacked. India should never have got much past 200 after being 5/87, and against better opposition they would not have been allowed to do so. I recall that they have been the longest team away from the game, and that 5 of their squad are facing eviction from their homes when the return home. Not the ideal atmosphere to try and play cricket & represent your country when they are going to do that to you - hence my view that their performance earns my vote for the tourneyment so far!!!
Game 4 (still in 'progress' lol - NZ 9/90 odd)
Australia 8D - awesome - must now be red hot favorites based upon the games so far!! yet another example of their not taking their foot off the opposition's throat when they have the upper hand (more like crushing it actually). They had a bit of luck today with 2 dropped catches early on, edges going just wide of fielders & Vincent out first ball t the 7th legitimate ball of the over- but you make your own luck & good sides take advantage when it comes along.
NZ
- i did not like their selection with Vincent 'keeping & Nevin dropped - a batsman short & exposed the middle order all rounders far too early. I know that Styris now considers himself to be a batsman that sometimes bowls, but when he takes NZ best ODI bowling figures in his last ODI v W Indies then he is still an all rounder in my book, & why he didn't get to roll the arm over beats me!!! Our line up only had 4 recognised batsmen & we lost 3 of those in the first 5 overs!!!! with 4 frontline bowlers and 3 bowling all rounders (none of them have much so far as their international batting averages go), we have the opposite selection of the Indians & it got what it deserved - not that it means anything as neither will win the trophey with those selections unless something very strange happens along the way (as happened in the Kenyan Final Aust V Pak). Just a quick acknowledgement of Vettori's performance with the ball - 1/25 of 10 - brilliant figures esp when you think of the situation when he was brought on - shows why he is regarded by those in the know as the premier left arm spinner in the game & one of the best slow bowlers going - when you think he is only 23 then he will surely go on to be one of the very best left arm spinners. Just to spice it up I consider him to be a more competitive performer away from home than either Kumble or Harbijhan!!!!!
regards to all
