"I want a defensive partner"

When was this altercation abt AA in ICF?
Since I started posting, on the date of the second day of the Irani Trophy final, last year. It was me, NewsJunkie, Gambit, F'Stan and Amit (who later switched sides) against Anil, Gaurang (especially these two), KM and many others. That lasted a long time. Lesser said of that the better.

Do you post there? Under which name? Who else posts on ICF?

I am from Chembur, in the North East, where nothing interesting happens.

Until he went we had Nasser, but Butcher is closer to that.
if butcher is a grafter then so is sachin......and india do have a grafter in dravid, but thats not the point here at all. the reason why chopra should be in the side is because he hasnt done anything wrong yet and because he is a genuine opener. its all fine and good if you have 1 makeshift opener but to go in with 2 would be inane particularly in conditions that favour the bowlers.

I do respect him and think that he is a good player, but I beleive that people do overrate him and his batting style. Changing a winning formula was what this thread was about (Yuvraj for Chopra). It seems that either way a winning formula will be broken.
which is what im completely against....chopra shouldnt be dropped at all. yes the formula will be changed anyhow but that doesnt mean you drop a successful captain and replace him with someone who hasnt really convinced too many people that he can do as well.

I have had it with ppl who call ganguly disoensable. He's an important part of the side. He most certainly is not useless. He played well in the test series against australia (averaged almost 50) and also did well in the one match against Pakistan. Prior to that, in the home series against NZ, he scored a century. So he has been getting the runs. He averages over 40. You ppl say he doesn't have good technique, yet he averages more than ppl like butcher and hussain and is neck to neck with trescothick.

I have no doubt that if it wasn't for his fighting century at the Gabba (with India on 62/3), Australia would have totally demolished India in that series. His innings set the tone up for India.

As a captain, he brings a lot to the side. Indian captains of the past have all been "too nice." With Ganguly it was different. He brought out a fighting spirit into the side. I have seen sides under Sachin and Azharuddin which lacked spirit. He speaks his mind clearly and backs his players. Balaji who was such a big success in Pakistan was very grateful to ganguly for having faith in him. If it was any other captain, balaji wouln't be in the side. Whose idea was it that Sehwag should open? Ganguly's. ppl criticised this move and now in hindsight, its a masterstroke. If ganguly feels yuvraj has it in him to be a good opener, then I'm willing to go with it. How can we know that it will be a failure without even trying it?

I would rather drop Tendulkar and have Ganguly in my team. Ganguly is the leader of this team and a team without him would be nothing.

I totally agree (about Ganguly being a leader). I've seen a lot of Indian captains since the 60's and Ganguly, to me, is better than the lot of them.

They haven't axed him as such, and he'll probably be 12th man most of the time, because Chopra is one hell of a good short leg/silly point fielder

Which I guess can be used in the arguement in picking him.

Face it, I would rather have him in there then see SS Das get smacked in the back when he ducks too late.

You went to any matches? His fielding was brilliant in the Australian series

That's what MasterBlaster said, Chopra would be 12th man because of his freakish feilding ability.

About openers, Yuvraj has to look to hit 4's and 6's, since that is also a style of opening, and that is what he's best at. If he starts crawling like SS Das or Chopra, he'll get nowhere. Still a far better choice than Bangar, Patel and ESPECIALLY Dasgupta- the worst bits-and-pieces player in Test cricket.

On Headlines Today, Sanjog Gupta interviewed Saba Karim and Vikrant (full name?) about this issue, after highlighting Chopra's unimpressive average. I don't think that should be a guide. If Ganguly averaged 125 in his debut series, he would be the next Bradman, wouldn't he? Chopra had got 4 40+ scores when he started, but negative orders of just 'blunting the ball' have resulted in his inability to convert starts. Then why blame him?

Saba's comments:Yuvraj is not what many consider a makeshift opener. He has been trying to improve his game as a top order player, consciously. He has put in quite an effort to play the fast bowlers quite well, and has got runs in the top 3.

Vikrant's comments: Chopra should not have been left out. Here was a combination that was working- they gave 4 good starts, which helped. He cannot be accused of not continuing, that just happens. That said, Yuvraj was playing well, especially against the fast bowlers, so he should not have been left out.

IMO yuvraj should (barring injuries or drastic slump in form) replace ganguly in a couple of years time.
That may happen frequently, given Ganguly's injuries which keep recurring.

Though Chopra hasn't done anything wrong, I would put Ramesh ahead of him, for the opening slot.

Yuvraj is a definite no though, according to me.

not exactly sure you know what you are saying. Ganguly missed one match vs NZ and two matches against Pakistan. As far as I know, these are the only matches he has missed in the recent past.
