Was Victor Trumper better than Clem Hill?
Yeah.

Trumper was viewed by almost everyone at the time as a superior of Clem Hill, in Australia they were percieved as close based on performance but in England, Hill was not percieved as anywhere near Trumper. Though, I think their output is nearly identical.

so I don't think Trumper is better by much, I reckon it's a bit about their playing styles that make people rate Trumper higher, his iconic 158 came off of 157 balls, he seemed to be a lot more free flowing and versatile of the two.

No they aren't.
It's not close.
Why not?

@Johan shared a link of their records when they played together and they are equal with Hill having a slightly better record

CH : 89 innings. 3412 runs @ 39.2. 7 tons & 19 50s
VT : 89 innings. 3163 runs @ 39.05. 8 tons & 13 50s

Trumper on sticky wickets was better than Bradman I reckon. Bradman played 14 innings on sticky wickets and had only 1 50+ score.
@capt_Luffy do you have any stats for Trumper vs Hill on wet pitches?

Stats alone do massive injustice to Trumper tbh.

Not really. They just remove some of the blatant bias towards him. Though I guess one could see that as a massive injustice considering that is largely why he’s considered great.

If two batsmen faced the same bowlers, played on the same pitches & scored same amount of runs, don’t you think it is unfair to say one is better than another?

In the matches they played together, Trumper had 4 150+ score (one of them was a double ton), where Hill had 2. And Trumper was certainly way better on wet wickets (both were considered equals on flat pitches). It can be argued that Trumper was the best wet wicket player. And add to that the fact that Trumper scored his runs at a S/R of 70, which means he scored as fast as Viv Richards.
He suffered from several health conditions, which made him less consistent.

Trumper when fit was the Greatest of all in wet wickets. They were all but gone when Headley came along, he was very good in them but not sure is undoubtedly top 5 there.

I saw an interesting stats.
Don Bradman played 14 innings on sticky wickets, and only had one 50+ score in those matches.
Headley played 13 innings on sticky wickets, and got 7 50+ scores in those matches.

Don would have a hard time being the GoAT if he played majority of his matches on wet wickets.
