Chanderpaul's the only batsman I've seen who I'm convinced just consciously played for his average every time he went out to bat. As a result he has a pretty average. Any analysis based primarily on average is going to over-rate him.

Barrington was a slow scorer and he over-performed in Tests but he wasn't just trying to rig the system.
How do you know that's the case, we don't have ball by ball data on how he batted with the tail.

For Chanderpaul we can perhaps make that judgement call, because we watched him. But that information is not usually mentioned in the match reports, so if Barrington had done the same, we would've no way of knowing.

I do agree with the point on batting lower down the order though, Barrington is fine batting any where.

Fun fact, Barrington once scored a 122 ball ton against Australia in the deciding test of an Ashes rubber. After coming in at 41/2

He was also known for bringing up his century with a random six, a feat he managed 4 times in tests.
