Run/wicket tally plays a massive role. I bet Jayawardene would comfortably win against like Crowe outside of CW. Same with Anderson vs Roberts.

His acclaim is down to a combination of volume, ploughing out a historically difficult role, and playing a leading role in iconic overseas victories. Not a problematic character too.

I don't rate Cook as highly as most because I don't think he was very good v quality bowling but respect his ability to set games up with daddy hundreds (dominated a series against each opponent except SAF) and his mammoth of runs in Asia. And he didn't totally go missing when his technique was exposed by quality attacks; he dug out contributions.

Another advantage Cook has when it comes to stuff like that is he is a very popular figure whereas Pietersen's character polarises opinion a lot. The BBC shortlist was put together just months after Cook's retirement. Being so fresh in the memory likely broadened nostalgia etc.

I suspect KP is rated higher. I know a lot of people who still rate him over Root etc.
Gooch would still be my pick though.

Gooch over Philander is a laughable take, for me.

Man had one great innings, and we can't stop riding his dick. Terrible analysis.
