Graeme Smith warns Panesar of racist abuse

Look, we can quibble about this small stuff all we like, but I think we all know there's going to be a sea of guys in blackface with turbans and Apu t-shirts on at the Vulture st end shouting "no ball!!" when Monty finally gets thrown the pill.

But I'd rather see the Ashes played in front of empty stadiums than having players abused, whether it's in England or Australia.. Cricket is about 30 years behind football, and the only way any progress will be made is if the authorities grow a spine and get really hard line (Although that will never happen ever)

The funniest thing is that there is a good chance that people will be yelling "no ball".

It's funny that somebody else thought that. I was going to ask what odds I could get that some fools would yell "no ball". It only takes one or two.

Yeah we got up real early on the morning they got released and tried and tried till we got through. I guess in retrospect we were really lucky, seeing as stacks of people missed out.

Graeme Smith warns Panesar of racist abuse

Cricinfo staff

November 10, 2006

Graeme Smith, South Africa's captain, feels that left-arm spinner Monty Panesar will face an "unbelievable amount of abuse" - some of it racist - from the vociferous Australian crowds as England defend the Ashes over the next two months.

Speaking to The Guardian in Cape Town, Smith, whose team had suffered racial abuse from a section of the crowd when they toured Australia last year, feared for Monty, a bearded Sikh who wears a black patka.

"I was chatting to some of our team just the other day and we all shivered at the prospect of what he could be in for," Smith said. "He is going to cop an unbelievable amount of abuse. I sincerely hope for everyone's sake, but especially his, that it isn't of a racist nature, but our own experience obviously leaves us with doubts.

"Hopefully Monty can become a bit of a folk hero. I can see how that might happen. But if he is selected instead of [Ashley] Giles at the beginning of the tour then the noise levels when he comes on to bowl, or even just fields the ball at mid-on, will be close to unbearable. I dread to think of him fielding on the boundary."

Smith says the South African team coped with the abuse by tackling it head-on and reported all instances.

"It was definitely the right move as far as we are concerned," he said. "Anyone can see in sport around the world that a zero-tolerance approach to racism is being adopted and that's the only way to go. We all understood the dangers of racist copycats, but to do nothing or say nothing in the hope that it would just go away would have been as bad as condoning it."

Smith and team-mate Shaun Pollock went public with the abuse after hearing the word 'kaffir' - a racist term used against black people in southern South Africa - being constantly shouted from the stands. "It wasn't hard to see how upset and angry the players were," Smith said. "Given what South African society was, where it has come from and where it is going, nobody wanted to stand aside and let that stuff happen."

The ICC has recommended lengthy bans for spectators caught racially abusing players, but Smith doesn't believe Panesar will find much encouragement from this. "It's good if they are fined or banned, or locked up would be better," Smith said. "But it won't help Monty or any other target for their rubbish. I just hope they are seriously well prepared for the worst eventuality. Then hopefully it won't happen."

Panesar has seen a psychologist to deal with the rigours of playing in Australia, a move that Glenn McGrath described as "soft" on a radio station. When asked about McGrath's comments, Panesar wasn't moved. "I heard about that," he conceded, "but I guess that's pre-Ashes [banter]. You just accept that as part of cricket. We had a brief chat about Australia, but it was a team thing, not on an individual basis. That's how it goes with cricket - you just accept it."

TBF racism at English football grounds has been reduced, in fact I only ever came across it once (at Portman Road about 5-6 years ago when someone called David Johnson a useless black what-have-you & she was roundly shouted down), but not totally eradicated. Not so very long ago the English crowd was singing "I'd rather be a **** than a turk", when we played Turkey in a qualifying match for Euro 2004.

Homophobia is still quite prevalent tho; Ashley Cole cops loads for his (alleged) preferences.

When I said "Thirty years behind football" I meant, cricket is about to enter the '80's unless some hardline measures are introduced... We all know what the 80's were like at English football grounds..

Not a chance

Football was characterised, and still is in some countries, by hooting, jeering, whistling, etc each and every time a coloured player went near the ball.

In some European countries, u also had (have) an element of neo-nazis present at many fixtures.

Clubs like Milwall, despite the protestations of many here, still have an under-current of racism amongst their crowds.

Fortunately, cricket is light years removed from any of that.

Whatever it takes!!!
How come this racist minority of Australia is always so vocal? Can nothing be done to get these jerks to keep their mouths shut so that the majority can enjoy the best cricket from the best cricketers?

It's quite prevalent I find singularly but not en-masse anymore unlike the continent.

Oh and Cashley only gets in the neck because he's an idiot. :p

It's difficult to isolate the culprits in a large crowd from the authorities perspective, it has to be a self-policing thing; the old adage "evil will triumph when good men do nothing" is quite apt, but I can fully understand treading carefully if some Mick Taylor bugger in town from the outback asks "wtf ya gonna do about it son".

But if one can get some back up, call a steward and with the new guidelines from CA or whoever, they should then be ejected.

The jerks that shout racist profanities are generally the sort of people that don't give stuff about anything, and think that all should bow unto them and kiss thy feet. Unfortunately there really is nothing that can be done to prevent these wastes of fresh air from letting rip with a gobful of abuse until it's actually happened.

AFAIC an automatic ejection from the ground should be the minimum penalty, then moving towards a 2/3 match or even lifetime ban at that particular venue depending on the seriousness of the offence, and if the offender has a prior record of abuse. The less of these scum at the cricket the better, and the sooner we have them booted out of the grounds the better.
