Graeme Smith warns Panesar of racist abuse

Haha, dickhead. This filter is tops.

Don`t respect Smith tbh, and I find it hard to believe he`s just looking out for his mate in Monty.

He didn't say he was. I suggested that as a motive seeing as others were were attributing motives to him that were acrimonious and/or nasty. He never said he was warning anyone, so there was no motive, good or bad.

1) You have Jigglypuff as your avatar, so I probably won`t take you seriously.

2) At least it`s not Ash Ketchum.

3) I know you`re patriotic about South Africa, and some of the comments made by members in this thread were miles off the mark, but it`s popular opinion that Smith keeps coming up with rubbish to try and make himself look cool, whilst he continually fails against Australia. He just can`t admit he`s not up to it. His pitch whinge in the CT is another fine example.

   That's hilarious. You judge whether to take someone seriously or not by their avatar? You've got a cat. You must be taken very seriously!:p

In my opinion, verbal racism from crowds is just a facet of life that the cricketers should be able to deal with. Criminalizing such behaviour is coming precariously close to punishing 'thoughts'. Cricketers aren't babies, they don't need to be mollycoddled and protected from every single stupid comment dished their way. You cannot change the racist mindset with aggresive levying of fines - peer pressure, in the form of fellow crowd members, is more likelier to be a bigger deterrent then fines/bans for chanting 'you black indian ****' or whatever.

Oh, and without doubt Smith is having a dig at Australia. Nothing malicious, I am sure, but a dig nonetheless.

That doesn't make it right to be Racist. It's easy for you to sit there and tell them to get on with it, but I'm sure that some of it is a lot worse than someone saying "You can't bowl you ****ing ****.

Of course. Where did I say or imply this?

A few shouts thrown from sixty feet away don't even come close to the casual racism one encounters in real-life. If the players aren't mentally tough enough to ignore your mom, my mom type insults then they should just as well give up playing cricket.

The onle thing he has to worry about is if there are any South Africans in the crowd.
If there are, Fletcher will draft them into the Test side by the next week.

except people were apparently using terms specific to South Africa that I'd never heard of before. Just because its reported many times doesn't make it not true either you know
Just because you don't know it, doesn't mean that all Australians don't, or that some racist **** wouldn't look it up.

That language isn't acceptable.

The Wheel is Forever
And it begins:

Australia's cricket authorities face a stern test of their new hardline anti-racism laws, after it was reported that Monty Panesar had been taunted as "a stupid Indian who can't speak English", during England's three-day warm-up match against New South Wales at Sydney.

Panesar, who underwent counselling from the team psychologist, Steve Bull, ahead of England's trip Down Under, was fielding on the boundary fence under the Clive Churchill Stand, when he was abused by a group of fans on the opening day of the match.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported that a spectator had shouted: "Give us a wave Monty. You can't speak English you stupid Indian, I'll have to say it in Indian. What are you doing playing in the English side, you're not English."

No official complaint has been made, although the paper added that both Panesar and the South African-born Kevin Pietersen, were subjected to similar abuse during England's opening fixture of the tour in Canberra on Friday, where eight people were ejected from the ground for unruly behaviour.

Under the new regulations, fans may face lifetime bans if they are found guilty of racial abuse during a match, while the venues themselves could be stripped of international status if they fail to act on any transgressions. The SCG Trust, who are responsible for the upkeep of the ground, admitted that three people had been ejected for excessive drunkenness.

Australia's racism problem came to light during South Africa's tour of the country last year, when Graeme Smith's men complained of the use of the derogatory term "kaffir". This week, Smith himself warned Panesar of the reception he was likely to get, adding: "We all shivered at the prospect of what he could be in for."

A spokesman for the England team said: "We have come out here to play the game with dignity, and we expect the Australian fans will show the sportsmanship they are renowned for and hope they will respect the players both on and off the field."
Nothing huge so far, pretty light. Its going to get much worse.

That's a funny one, with the quotes there. Is that "racial abuse"? Evidently they said similar things to Kevin Pietersen about him not being English etc, but I can't see it being considered racial in that case. In fact, I don't think there's anything wrong with Pietersen being taunted for being South African, provided that it doesn't go completely over the top. He copped plenty in South Africa, after all.

Panesar is a different case because he's actually born and raised in England obviously, but it does bring into question what qualifies as racial abuse and what doesn't. Not that I have any issue with these guys being ejected from the ground, either way.

"Stupid Indian who can't speak English" (sic) isn't racial abuse?

News to me.

I don't think the part about him not being English is racial, the part about stupid Indian isn't either, not really. But I think this is just the beginning.

Racially abused by a South African ffs. Why do peole continuously keep leaving this out.
Because, unless you're still trapped in 1985, whether he's South African or not is totally irrelevant.. We all know who has the worse record as far as racism in crowds is concerned, and Smith it appears, for once in his life has been proved correct..

And although some SA expats in Australia are the most bitter, miserable folk I've ever come across, the argument that only the expats were abusing SA's cricket team doesn't wash with me.. I doubt there are many of them present watching England at the moment dishing it to Monty and co..

What we could see in cricket is an explosion in the type of boorish, racist behaviour that football has only partially got rid of, and it could become more widespread and that is pretty worrying
