No it isn't. A hate crime is a criminal act (and insulting somebody in and of itself is not criminal) which had its basis in... well, hate. If you kill someone or assault them because of their race for example, that is a hate crime. Calling someone a black whatever is not a hate crime, and does not violate any criminal law. The best you could do is maybe sue for mental damages and reference racial vilification laws, but since they are designed for print and recorded material and not for speech in a semi-private arena like a changeroom, you would have a hard time doing anything at all in the courts. He didn't say it to anybody's face, and he didn't harm anybody physically. It might make him a despicable racist ********, but it doesn't mean he broke the law.

Major delays to the game are an important issue. The game runs on income from TV rights and the like, and one of the conditions of this is that cricket doesn't go around messing up their schedule too badly. There is also the tiny little detail of the crowds at the ground. They need to be able to get home (etc) and meet their own schedules without having to miss the last part of the game.

While I don't defend what he said, calling Lehmanns outburst a 'hate crime' diminishes the term, and belittles those who have died as a result of their race, religion or culture. Please keep some perspective.

The Pakistani Bowlers didnt seem to have had any problems with time. Even though the team had it coming ( it is a punishment for the entire team, not just Ganguly), IMO 6 ODIs is too much.
