English Domestic Season 2025

FYI I've merged the Durham pre-season match thread into here just for tidiness - usually we use this as the catch-all Counties thread each season so this is the best place to chat about upcoming/ongoing domestic matches. (Or there's the Durham CCC thread to use for general Durham-y updates if you think that's a better fit!)

Franchise retained lists out today. Surrey still lending the most players (10) at this stage.

Lancashire next at 9, Hampshire 7, Warwickshire 5.

Maybe 10 across all counties who are on white ball contracts / were never going to play for their county of 59 domestic players named.

Draft for bulk of the remaining players 12 March. £200k for top rated players for a month's cricket!

Middlesex have certainly made some statement signings.

I’ve decided to head down to the Cheltenham festival in July to watch them play Gloucestershire.

They've probably been out for a while but I've just caught up with the FCC Second XI fixtures.

Last year Lancashire were scheduled to play 9 SEC matches (one was cancelled after the death of Josh Baker). In 2023 they played 12. In 2025 there are just 5 SEC games plus a few "red ball" friendlies. Clearly nothing scheduled for August as many of the 2nds squad will be involved in the One Day Club.

Northants have signed an Aussie pace bowler called Liam Guthrie, of whom I know nothing except that he is a left armer and has a UK passport.

Is he any good?
To be honest I've never heard of him Made his
FC debut in 2018 and hasn't made any national games in either of the 3 formats At first glance it's a risky signing but Darren Lehman is head coach there so hopefully has some idea about his potential 🤔

That's a left field signing. He's got some pace, I think up to high 130s, but his control is generally so-so at best. Even though he's stepped up a bit over the past two seasons he can't break in the Queensland team ahead of Neser, Bartlett and Sketetee (who hasn't exactly covered himself in glory in his County stints), and has strong competition from Whitney, Straker and Vidler. This season he's played two matches and averaged 30 at 4 an over. He took 11 wickets in two matches the season before, but was still expensive.

The main thing is that we are talking about Northamptonshire, whose attack is almost completely lacking in any kind of pace. He's on the short side but that's not necessarily a problem in Div 2 where the pitches tend to be a bit rougher. The fact he's playing as a local is no doubt a factor.

For me his main claim to fame is conceding 70 in a BBL match a few years ago.

Yeah I think there's something about the County Ground that breaks pace bowlers. We should probably accept that it's our inevitable fate to turn out a quartet of medium paced trundlers bowling 78mph dibbly dobblers. Oh well. I hope he's a more successful signing than Blessing Muzarabani.

All the northants bowlers i can remember were exactly that, mallender, griffiths, capel etc with the exception of Sarfraz. Theyd do better signing a proper spinner, they once had bedi and mustaq in the same team along with willey steele and williams, 5 spinners!

that seems a terrible waste of money which could be invested elsewhere in the county game.
