Yes but against run of the mill club bowlers he did not impress
Just because he's rated as a quality International Leg-Spinner doesn't mean anything when it comes to batting in a club match. 1st of all it's his bowling that is rated, whilst your concerned by his bowling...you wouldn't expect Glenn McGrath to smash a club side around for a quick 50 even though he's a top class bowler...because he is, quite frankly, a rabbit, not much ability with the bat. Also club pitches arn't the best, and you said he opened the batting. A lot of club bowlers learn how to get the best out of their home pitches, medium pacers on green tops come to mind when I go back to when I played club cricket a few years ago.

Anyway why are we having this convo? He's a bowler...

In one game which is clearly not that serious.

For Warwickshire 1sts in games that count, he's batted quite well.

Yeah I was about to say, his hit a couple of 50's this season vs higher opposition, he got one vs the Kent 2nd's and Iam certian he hit one for the first team as well.

Not True they is a massive difference between county number 11 and club crickets, if Obuya played for my club he would bat in the top 5 but against 60-70 mph bowling he did not impress.... also it was not a green top and none of our bowlers know about our pitches as the groundman is shocking.....

They took it Seriously the warwick lads and brought along Mo Shelkh and Obyna also some fringe members like Nick Warren, Tahir (Who broke micheal powells toe) also Jamie Spiers so they took the strongest availible side out.

So Marc dont call my club playing warwick a joke match ever again it was 100 years of Aston manor and i for one would be dismayed at comments from you.... if i organized the match

Chris, I would never call it a joke match - I for one am glad that county clubs do that sort of game, but you must admit that there's no way that they'd play quite so relaxed in a competitive game (for a start Collins would be at 8 or 9!)

fair enough they did reverse the order but they did not take it as a joke

I bet they didn't take it too seriously either though.

If they had have done, Cricket would've been the loser IMO as the game would've been finished very quickly.

By adopting a semi-playful attitude they entertain the masses, and ensure a fairly close game.

As Monty Python once said :

"Excuse me - the record's stuck-the record's stuck-the record's stuck" etc.

Ed Smith hits a century for Kent again. 108 out of 189. Next highest scorer was 12 (apart from extras). That's 4 in successive Championship innings.

...equalling the record of some guy called Frank Woolley. Don't think he ever achieved anything either.

Impressive too to make 108 out of 189 when the next highest score was 12. A low scoring game so Smith clearly in top form, but instead England have Robert Key on standby. :(

Well, the great hope Thorpe was asked to be on standby and turned it down.

Iam a bit surpirsed to how he goes on iam here I want to be selected and as soon as the selctors ask him he says no

The only half decent reason I can think of is the Surrey match is quite important, but so is Kent's we must win this match to keep up with the pack and get some daylight with the bottom 3.

Thorpe said 'I have a bad back' - well, he should fit in well because England have a bad side.

I once heard of a GP (General Practicioner - Doctor) who, if he was asked to sign a sick note for someone with a 'bad back' - used to write 'Pendulus Plumbum' - Latin for 'swinging the lead'.

By crying off with a bad back yet playing for Surrey, he has instantly disqualified himself for ever in my book.

Bad back = no spine.
