Durham County Cricket Club

Close of play:

Durham 343-7 (96 overs), McKinney 143*, Potts 53*.

All the headlines and the plaudits on Day 1 must go to McKinney, he was magnificent throughout, never looked in any real trouble and in the last hour or so of play he was able to manoeuvre the ball and the fielders pretty much wherever he wanted - it was very reminiscent of that season when Keaton Jennings scored millions. Whatever happens next is all about how hungry he is, both in terms of this innings and his season. He’s got a brilliant chance to come back tomorrow and make a double hundred, to really catch the eye of the England selectors and the cricket writers.

Apart from that, Durham’s batsmen were a shambles until Potts came in to carry out the rescue mission. Gay, Bedingham, Robinson and Ackermann all surrendered meekly and gifted their wicket away, Rhodes too was a shocker in the circumstances. It’s a tough pill to swallow, because the similarities to last week are vast, batting first on a belting track, being rolled for sub 400 and from that point on not having a sniff. To give away momentum in the fifteen minutes after Tea like we did, to what could arguably be the worst bowling attack in the country (not including their notable absentees) isn’t a great sign. I don’t think it was being harsh to suggest that through five days of Championship cricket - to have struggled so much against two very ordinary sides who many people feel could have a torrid season - we need to worry more about relegation than of doing anything at the right end of the table.

Doomlordery aside, the lads need to come to the ground tomorrow with a focus and an intent of getting up beyond 400. Whilst (like at Trent Bridge) I still think that would be short, it’ll give us a chance to wrestle back the initiative if we bowl well.

I'd say compare Crawley's batting to McKinney's. Potts doing a good job supporting him...
Early days still, having watched more or less every ball of McKinney’s First Class journey to this point he’s got a couple of technical flaws he needs to put right, not dissimilar to Crawley, but where he differs is that he actually looks keen to work on his flaws. Unlike the stubborn, dare I say pig headed Crawley.

A complete tame and nothing dismissal from McKinney

But a cracking knock all the same.

Need Pottsy to ton up and get us the final batting point.

I've been out this morning. Saw Ben's 150 earlier but looks like he got out soon after.

Potts still out there. He's no mug with the bat either.

3 overs left to get the 13 needed for the extra batting point.

Honestly, these two on commentary are f**king insufferable, it’s like Durham have employed two secondary school pupils doing their media coursework.

One of the best commentators on the county circuit is literally nextdoor to them too.

387 all out.

We’ve left about 70 out there, what’s worse, we’ve surrendered SEVEN wickets to two lads who wouldn’t even be in their side if they had their full quota of bowlers available. A leg-spinner who hasn’t turned a single ball and a club level quick bowler who has bowled as many half-trackers as I would’ve done. Bamber and Barnard who I expected to give us a bit of a chew have been completely ineffective.

Five sessions, that’s how much toil I’m predicting is coming up for our lot.

Who's the spinner they've got instead of Ali?

I think the kids looks a talent from what I've seen for England u19s. Not been able to watch in the full this game.

Raine traps Yates infront with the third ball of the innings, couldn’t have been doing anything other than hitting the stumps - umpire says not out.
