his FC record implies it was a flukey short test career :P

Not really...FC average just shy of 40 for a South African opener in that 1928-48 era is not to be sneezed at. The other great SA openers of that time; Herbie Taylor & Bruce Mitchell averaged 41 & 45 respectively in FC matches

tbh I just wanted to mention it coz when I first discovered Melville's hidden little gem of a test career I assumed his FC average was 45+
