yeah which is a fair chunk higher than 37
Yes and no, about the same difference as between openers Gavaskar and Greenidge who played in the same era. Not saying Melville was as good as Mitchell, but you take my point.

I thought about Melville, but wasn't sure whether people would judge pre-War players on just their pre-War careers, so decided to go for a more Vintage team.

Just an update, as just realised I'd left George Giffen out of the previous side I posted.

Struggling with the batting order of my classic team. I have 6 bowlers already & feel the like of Giffen and Tate are already batting too low, the perks of having so many allrounders in Noble, Tate, Trott & Giffen and even Bobby Peel was no mug with the bat, averaging 19 in FC cricket back when it was good to average 30 including a double hundred. Any advice on my batting order would be appreciated.

Maybe Noble and Giffen up a spot, Noble could handle number 5.

Dexter and Simpson handy with ball so Hussey and Lindsay to add some depth to the batting.

True, but Giffen normally batted at 3
yeah but with that many all-rounders and bowling options already, I think I need a middle-order batsman & a keeper, so will probably follow you advice and bat Noble @ 5... select a middle order bat at 6 and shuffle Giffen to 7... damn long batting line-up
