Yeah, this clearly isn't the right way to downgrade someone. When you are simply doing it to upgrade someone else the agenda is just too obvious and nobody will take your downgrade seriously.

Best way to downgrade someone is to randomly dunk on a player in a way that presents no clear motive, ulterior or otherwise. That way everyone will know that you are 100% serious and trust your take.

...For example, how freakin overrated was Neil McKenzie? Raw stats seem ok for a SA opener, but remember the 00s was a runfest era and when you dig deeper you see he feasted in Bangladesh and Zimbabwe against minnow bowling, inflating his average to merely 'passable'. The guy played almost 60 Test matches and what impact did he even have? What a wasteman.
Hudson>McKenzie imo.

Suggest you heed your own advice when you spend your days disparaging certain cricketers.
But who do I disparage?

Subz has literally said it was his goal to remove the blinders with regards to Amby and lower his rating in the forum.

Went on a crusade against Kallis and has gone rounds with @Slifer about Lara only to highlight that Sachin didn't perform that much better against said pace.

Lol so to upgrade yourself you have to downgrade me. I see how it is.

One thing i never understand is, Many people are willing to include / consider Barry Richards in their AT 11 while completely ignoring Mike Procter, who was more guaranteed ATG potential ( Allrounder ) and more proven in terms of Tests, Super Tests and longevity.
I think this is because Procter’s career overlapped to a large extent with the big four all rounders who captured the imagination.

Barry only really hard Gavaskar and to an extent Greenidge as company amongst openers.

I wouldn't say more proven but I totally get your point.

Part of the problem is that besides Gavaskar and outside of the black and white era English openers, there's a paucity of options for the openers slot. And let's be honest, none of them were as stylish or attacking as he was.

Procter has Imran and Hadlee as completion for the no. 8 spot, many push his former teammate's son as well, and Akram can also fill that role. Plus not everyone sees the necessity of having a bowling all rounder, while openers are a must.

But yes, he was also a beast.

Procter is unique, all other Bowling Allrounders lack something that stops them from becoming perfect bowling allrounders.

Hadlee - Batting not strong enough
Imran - Batting ( bar last few years ) and fielding
Kapil - Bowling below ATG level
Botham - same as above
Miller - Same as above

Pollock and Davidson a league below the above group.

Procter had everything, except big stage opportunities.

Barry Richards being opener might have some influence, but there are Sunny, Hobbs, Hutton, WG and Trumper.. Along with the likes of Sutcliffe, Sehwag.. Etc . So, I dont see scarcity of quality openers.

I think, its Sobers. His existence cancels need of Procters and Hadlees, just like Bradman at number 3, but then there are people who selects Viv in AT11 and plays him at 4 or 5.

Pollock isn't a league below Kapil on batting alone. Away average of 36 vs 26 is a huge gap.

Bowling was stronger in Kapil's time, but I'm not sure which era was tougher for lower order bats. The main threats to a lower order bat are reverse and quality spin, which were both common in Pollock's time but not Kapil's.

They are very close as bats.
