The rating of each bowling attack is based on the career averages at the end of the series in question of the top 5 bowlers by overs bowled, in addition to any other bowler who bowled 10% of the overs. That big advantage to this is that you get a snapshot of the strength and/or reputation of each bowler at the time the series was played. And I can also apply these bowling attack ratings when adjusting the career averages of test batsmen.

Another way to do it would be to just base the strength of each bowling attack on the career home or away/neutral averages but as I posted before, the disadvantage to this is that bowlers such as Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee and Tim Southee would be rated on their careers in their first 10 appearances, rather than their bowling averages at the time, which were very high. I would appreciate any thoughts on this conundrum.

Is there any reason stokes stokes innings from https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-australia-2nd-test-1336044/full-scorecard doesn't make the top 100?

Always looking forward to updates for this, so thanks. Fascinating to see some of the bowling ratings though in these innings, 797 for Simpson's 156* seems incredible to me. Apparently you've got 14 of these innings coming against 700+ rated bowling attacks, is there no innings worth consideration against 800+ rated attacks or is that just something that hasn't happened yet?

Great question.

Here is the breakdown of Australia's attack for Simpson's 156*. Remember that I only rate the top 5 bowlers by overs bowled and any other bowler that bowled more than 10% of the innings. The average is the sum of the weightage of % of overs bowled by each bowler.

Iverson's average is adjusted because he had bowled in less than 20 innings in his career by the end of the series. The formula for adjustment is: IF(AND(Inns<20,Average<32),(((Ave*Inns)+(32*(20-Inns)))/20),Average)

IF(Attack average<=32,((Attack average/32)*-1000+1500),((32/Attack average)*1000-500))

32 is the era average for all bowlers from 1920 to the present day.

So for an attack to be rated 800 or more (from 1920 to the present day), the overall attack average must be 22.40 or less, which is incredibly rare. You're welcome to try to find one!

Other eras:
1877-1893: 20.00
1894-1914: 26.00

It's a bit a fascinating that there among the 5 innings coming in for losses, 2 are from Indians; but they aren't the two most famous ones, which are considered among if not the best knocks of India's Top 2 and World top 10 batsmen; Sachin Tendulkar's 136 and Sunil Gavaskar's 96, both against Pakistan. I believe it might be as they were in home and against weak on paper attacks? Also, what was the rating of Vijay Hazare's 145 in Melbourne?

The obvious ones would be the 100 and 98 in 1984, but I think an under rated one of his was the ton at the MCG in the 92/93 series against Ambrose, Walsh and Bishop. IIRC it ended a pretty big century drought for him too. Came in at with them in a bit of strife too.

None of those rate particularly highly, unfortunately because the West Indies spinners such as Gomes, Hooper, and Richards bowled plenty of overs, which totally rekt the overall ratings of the attacks.

Gavaskar's 96 gets a rating of 11.63.

Tendulkar's 136 gets a rating of 12.98.

The main issue with Tendulkar's rating is the average-at-end-of-series of Nadeem Khan:

Nadeem Khan's average of 115 is adjusted to 64, which is double the era avearage of 32. I do this so one bowler with an extremely high average doesn't totally ruin the attack's overall rating.

Take Nadeem's overs out and the Pakistan attack has an overall average of 26.67.
